One of our local radio stations ran a piece on "What's the scariest Halloween Movie". I wasn't listening that close but the article was mostly for fun. The general gist was based on which movie raised the participants heart rate the highest and most often. "Sinister" was rated the most unnerving of a fairly long list of classics. I had not seen it yet so I rented it that evening. It started out so brilliantly (albeit a tad maccobb) with the hair standing up on the back of neck several times. Really jolting and disturbing in a scary movie kinda way. Then, 30 minutes in the entire bottom dropped out and it became cliqueic and predictable and even at times somewhat silly.

They had the makings of a enormously scary movie. Seems like someone either gave up mid-script or the money ran out. Too bad cause it coulda been a great one!

It's amazing how the horror film has developed over the years and how we have become increasingly immune to the whole thing. 60, 70 years ago, when people were being terrified by Frankenstein and the Werewolf Harry Potter would have been banned for being too frightening.
The Shining was great. I read Dr Sleep a couple of years ago and I enjoyed the book (as I do everything S King). I've never seen the movie but I'll have to watch it at some point.

I like all of the old 30's classics such as Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. Of a more recent vintage than those, but still old (60's) and my favorite horror film of all time is the original version of 'The Haunting' with Clair Bloom and Julie Harris.

It's a bit odd but I like quirky movies, 'Shadow of the Vampire' with Willem Dafoe as Orlok/Schreck and John Malkovic as F.W. Murnau.

I think a good movie to watch on Halloween is "Sleepy Hollow" , with Johnny Depp. It isn't really scary but it has a great atmosphere; very cinematic. I plan on watching it again this Halloween. I'm sick of vampire and zombie movies. If you really want to be creeped out, watch "Hereditary".

House of 1000 Corpses is great

Rob Zombie really understands horror movies.

I'm not really a big fan of modern horror films though. That shaky camera thing drives me nuts. It all started with Blair Witch Project and it has gotten out of hand.

House of Wax 1953 with Vincent Price, Charles Bronson. Not scary all the way through, but creepy at points.

Fright Night and the LostBoys. Netflix has a new series called Dracula that reimagines the vampire trope.

I always thought the original "The Haunting" was pretty spooky. "The Ring" had us afraid to go in the basement alone for a while too

Barry, I forgot about The Ring. I saw it in the theaters when it came out (2002) and it was fantastic.
