Real deal 70's Bozo Western Bell, not one of the Japanese made models. Would love to see how close I could get to that Leo kottke/Peter Lang tone. Plus its the guitar used by my fav players and on my fav lps.

A 70's Guild D-50. Back in the 80's a friend of mine's brother was going to sell it to me for $400 (lot of money at that time). It had a bowed neck so I said I would buy it contingent on sending it back for warranty work, which we did. It came back good as new and then he reneged, stating that his father would be upset with him as he bought it for him. I saw and played it a few years ago and it had the most beautiful honey colored spruce top and still sounded like a million dollars. Through the years he has apologized to me several times but I've yet to accept it.

I bought a used 2012 Epiphone EJ-200 last week and I'm blown away with how good it sounds so for me my 'white whale' is a (20 x the price) Gibson SJ-200 .... but one of the 'good ones' that I've only ever read about.
I'm told they do exist.

In 1977 I let go of (I do not even remember to whom...bad year) a Lyle Hummingbird. I bought it in a pawnshop in 74 so it was likely from 69 or 70. memory makes things sweeter but I remember it being warm and sweet and sounding like a cannon.

Call me Ishmael...
My "white whale" would be this Somogyi Andamento Modified Dreadnought in Maple that I demonstrated in 2011. It still haunts me this day. The asking price was north of $100,000 at the time. Maybe one day.

Santa Cruz H-13 I played in a shop in north Atlanta about 5-6 years ago. Amazing sound, played itself, and had the prettiest sunburst

I'd really like to play a Webber Roundbody. And if I like it as much as I think I might, that's one I'd want to have.
I also once played a Martin 00-28VS at Elderly. What a great guitar it was! Now in his heart, Ahab had some glimpse of this, namely: all my means are sane, my motive and my object mad. -Herman Melville, Moby Dick or The Great Whale (1851), Chapter XLI Greg Rappleye |
