There was a $16,000 Froggy in the store the last time I was shopping and I was afraid to play it. I was afraid I would have to take it home (and the price exceeded my bank book).

A White Whale guitar for me would be the Martin D-21 that a fraternity brother stole from me 40 years ago. (It was the last day of class. He packed up my guitar along with another brother's albums and he drove off.) I would go and get it but he lives 1,600 miles away.

I suppose an SX guitar would be an appropriate candidate.

Probably the '68 Les Paul goldtop I bought new when I was in high school. It was the first reissue with P-90's and the wraparound tailpiece and was entirely too much guitar for me at the time. I sold it and have been looking for it ever since, so exactly an Ahab experience.

back in the early 80's I sold 3 Yamaha SG's to an australian guy. he was also a lefty and said he had looked a long time and they would be for his own use. He was a good player, like to think he still has one or two of them.

the Yams were sold off along with other kit, following a motorcycle accident, I could'nt play 'em and the money sure helped.

A D28 is still in Singapore it went to a good home

Except the central plot of the story is about Ahab, and his obsession/pursuit of the whale, not the crew.

Which could be why i mentioned I mentioned I was referring to the underlying events, not the novel.

The film "In The Heat of The Sea" is based on the actual events, and apparently fairly accurate. as to guitars, I do not want what I have not got.

There's a fine line between the White Whale, and the Holy Grail. Both for me, is a spruce/mahogany OM or 000. I've had several such as Martin 000-18 and Larrivee OM-40 pass just out of my reach. It's the one that got away. I try not to obsess. Just when enough time goes by and I think I'm finally satisfied with what I have, I see her in the distance, and I am ready to throw it all away for the chance to be with her.

Owned but let go of? Nothing. I hoard Guitars.

Held but should not have let go of? Banner Gibson J50 from 42 I believe. Somebody around 1960ish painted it black. Must've been a Johnny Cash fan, so the guitar was "affordable" for what it was. It sounded incredible.

Never laid hands on a 45 of any sized Martin. Though I believe it would do little for me over a D28 or 00028. The Clapton Martin is my grail guitar. Past that it would be a boutique guitar of some sort. Collings or drive into Nacogdoches with $10K in my pocket and meet the Kinnairds.
