Do you play Blackbird's changes stretch or on 1st String?
In Blackbird you go from x3xx5x to either x8xx4x or 3xxx4x.
Which one do you play? |

I'm not sure I understand your question.
This is how I roughly play it if that helps, a bit rushed sorry. Forgive the fisheye outlook they're my riding goggles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKI_Y...ature=youtu.be Edit: think I've got it now, I went for the stretch & will mark it off as so. Stick with what I know

Basically, there's a couple of spots in the song where you can fret the same note either on the first string one fret below where you're playing the fifth string or you can make the stretch to play it four frets above on the second string. I can make the reach fairly comfortably, but I find it easier to play it on the first string with my index and middle, then use middle and ring (or pinkie) for the next chord. Just my 2 cents.

If I understand what you're asking, when I first learned it, I stretched for the climbing part, but I eventually figured out I could switch strings to get the same notes in a much easier to reach position.

all these posts make it sound really confusing. I play it with the stretch, but now I am curious to hear (see on youtube might be better, actually) it with the alternative chord position.

I play the 1st string shift. I think I've seen a video of Sir Paul playing it the shift way.

I play it using the stretch (it occurs on the word "Learn' during "Learn to fly" or "Learn to see." I saw Sir Paul do it differently without the stretch. After seeing that, I learned it Paul's way. But I keep using the stretch cuz I'm used to it and it looks more impressinve if someone is watching

I find it sounds better with the stretch becuase using the same string it has more of the same tone than with a different string, so you hear the climbing and falling of the lines better. It's not just the note you're going for but also the feel of the passage so I play the whole thing on two strings.

No, it's the same pitch. It's just that the tonal quality of the note would be a bit different by virtue of its being played on a different string and at a different place on the fretboard.

It is the same note and same pitch, but the same note can sound different on two different strings. Different gauge, different speaking length, and just different sound. I think timbre is the word I'm looking for. It's noticeable if you do something like play middle C on each string.

If switching is good enough for Paul, it's good enough for me.
Do I really think I'm going to improve on a McCartney composition by making things harder on myself than he did? |

I do the flip. Got to agree, that's what Sir Paul does, then I want it to sound like he plays it. Sometimes it sounds better to keep things on the sames strings, it's done all the time in classical music. There's a famous story of Andres Segovia just about ripping Christopher Parkening's head off for changing the fingerings in Bach's Chaconne, which had been arranged by Segovia. Parkening replied that his teacher had changed them to make it easier to play. Segovia would kick students out for that particular crime, but said if it was the teacher, okay, but go home and relearn it. So Parkening spent all night relearning the piece, which is a crazy piece of music, and rather long, and returned the next day and played it "correctly". Segovia let him stay after that.
