Many builders prefer to deliver with whatever new production tubes are reliable at the moment. On the NOS front, I've heard it said that you can't go wrong with GE. There is one thing to consider: If you push these amps they wear out tubes. So, if you use an attenuator and push the amp you may want to put in something more expendable than an NOS tube when you are flogging it.

Oh, boy, now I'm talking like them...

Thanks! I'm going to use the JJ's the kit comes with for building and troubleshooting, then swap out the preamp and rectifier tubes for some nice vintage ones. I loved how the one I played sounded when pushed hard with the new production tubes, but thought it could use less gain and a little more smoothness when clean.

Another Update: I was able to find the rhythm and lead sound for the Eagles "I Can't Tell You Why" (Don Felder) like this: I plugged into the Bright channel. The final settings for my amp were Bright - 6, Normal - 10 3/4, Tone - 12. I plugged in the ES-335, set it to middle pickup position, and pulled up both pickup volumes to around 6. Voile'! HUGE. The semi-acoustic nature of the guitar is really brought out by this amp. I tell ya, the tones just keep falling out.

i like swapping out the 12ax7s for 7025, 12at7, 12ay7 and 12au7, not to mention the ecc83,etc. swaps. sure gives a different sound for each swap. sometimes it works, sometimes not.

thanks for the update bob as this is very interesting to me.

play music!
