Default SOLD: 2011 Santa Cruz Deep Body 000 Red Spruce/Brazilian

This one is a tough one to let go. It’s THE most beautiful guitar I have ever owned, and one of the best sounding but …. I’ve reached the ripe age of 65 and need to downsize the herd.

I should have learned long ago that I should not buy a) new guitars b) used guitars in mint/near mint condition. I’m simply afraid to play them. I know, I know, but that’s the way I am. I bet I haven't played the guitar for more than an hour since I got it. This guitar is in amazing condition. I bought it from AGF’er Tim Lynch in 2016. Tim has/had a machine shop in Santa Cruz and provided truss rods to them, at one time. Tim, of course, is the original owner. I am the 2nd owner.

Below you will see pictures that Tim took along with ones I took at the time of this posting. It has quite the story.

The Back & Side Woods
I was intrigued by the pattern of the Brazilian on the front and back and asked him about it. Tim said:

“I bought this, and several other, Rosewood sets from the same person over the years. He would send me 3-4 pictures and I would choose the ones I wanted. At one time he sent me a picture of several guys digging out the underside of a house to extract old logs of Rosewood. That is as far as I can get you. He supplies several high-end luthiers in the US.”

The Top
Another great story. Tim advertised the guitar as “Red Spruce” top. When I contacted Santa Cruz, I was told that the guitar was “German Spruce”. I asked Tim about it and he said:

“SCGC is correct the top was German and was a very nice one. It was one that I supplied them. They screwed up the color on the sunburst and Joseph (King) had the finish guys redo it. They then sanded the top too thin. The shop had just received a shipment of several new Adi tops and Joseph had 4 set aside told me they were the best and to choose the one I wanted. I did and they replaced the top while it was still being built. All 4 were master grade tops.”

The Specifications
  • Top Red Spruce
  • Back/Sides Brazilian Rosewood
  • Bridge Brazilian Rosewood
  • Fingerboard Brazilian Rosewood
  • Peghead Brazilian Rosewood
  • Binding Brazilian Rosewood
  • Nut 1 13/16"
  • Saddle spacing 2 5/16"
  • Scale length 25 3/8
  • Tuners Waverly 3 on a plate
  • Bridge pins Pernambuco
  • Body Depth is 1/4" Deeper than standard

The Pictures
I have included some of Tim's pictures and one of mine. Click to see the entire album of photos

The Sound
Sound is tough to describe so I've included some tracks I recorded using my iPhone. Keep in mind that I fingerpick with bare fingers, so you don't get the "ring" so I included a track of strumming each string with a pick.

Don't forget, those pins are Pernambuco.
This guitar is not only a visual taste treat It has a badass sound that should be even better now.

Thanks, Tim. You are so right. I've truly enjoyed owning this guitar, but it deserves to be played.

For the most part, I like the choices I've made in life. But then I come across guitars like this and find myself wishing I'd gone into business or law or something.

Man that's gorgeous.

Thank you, funkapus. I went into business and wish I’d become a physicist. Grass / greener.
