When your guitar is going to do that low end howl .
You know by ear what frequency it is.
You don't need to turn it up to the point
of feedback. Just use the notch filter to
notch out the offending frequency ( Usually somewhere
between 150 and 200 hz) then after you hear it roll off
turn up the volume slowly and adjust (fine tune)the notch again.
If you never use the notch filter it could be set allowing a frequency
that is causing your problem. You should play with it.
The post above(post #4) explaining how high and low frequency are perceived
differently at higher volumes is called the Fletcher Munson curve.
