Default Si Bheag Si Mhor - Keith Chappell arrangement

Hi all

I have been trying to find this tab for a while now after deciding to learn this arrangement - but it seems almost impossible!

I know that there are several AGF’ers that have learnt and played it and that Keith used to have a link to it on his video (which has now gone)

I would really appreciate it if anybody had a copy they would be willing to share.

Thanks

Peter

Should not be too hard to learn it by ear. FWIW lots of nice versions of it out there that I like better and tabs of some of those are available.

Default A suggestion

Since I am hard at work on this piece of music, let me offer a suggestion....

I have listened to various arrangements of Si Bheag Si Mhor for decades and have played several. Not until I encountered William Coulter's arrangement did the piece completely overwhelm me with emotion and reverence(?). His arrangement consists of seven variations of the tune, each building on the other and is pure sonic joy at it's most extreme. He has published the tab in his book, Celtic Crossing published by Mel Bay. Find Bill playing it on YouTube.

I have dedicated all of 2018 for this song and one other Coulter arrangement, Citi na gCumman, both in DADGAD. 'Citi' is memorized. Am working on 'Si Bheag'. What a pleasure it is to sit and play these two pieces over and over. They never wear thin.

Steve

Nice version. Did not hear seven variations though, but more like various trills and tweaks. Maybe there is a recording that differs from
the ones I have heard.

+1. A good tune to try your own arrangement, as well. Works well in DADGAD and Dropped D

That's a nice book of tunes. Note that Bill's Si Bheag is based on Pierre Bensusan's so that's another nice one to check out. Pat Kirtely's version is also easy, and is probably also based on Pierre's.

I just double checked the music; yep, seven variations, building on one another, with a nice ending. Subtle differences in a couple.

Just had a listen to William Coulter’s version - it’s a cracker and I have found the book on Amazon.

It sounds like quite a handful but I reckon I am up for it.. ;-)

Thanks again Steve.

Wrighty, you are welcome. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I did not find any part really difficult for the left hand. The challenge for me is the complete memorization of every subtle change in all the variations; and equally challenging is the smooth movement and getting pure tones throughout. It will keep me busy for awhile, but I never get tired of a single note played.

When you are ready for a real Coulter challenge, go to YouTube and search William Coulter. Look for one where he is playing guitar in a TED talk. The tune is called An Daingean, a Coulter composition. I'm setting aside 2019 for that one. It's an amazing piece.

This version off YouTube is from his recording nearly exactly as tabbed in the book.

Here is the link to the other song I mentioned earlier; his TED performance (Bill comes on at about 4:10)

At my age, I need to plan out my years to make the most of the 'few' I have left. :-)
