A 12 fret RainSong OM sized guitar would be my recommendation based on what I've owned and played, but I've not tried the Sable or X-20.

Like someone further up, I went to a store specifically to try the El Capitan, and I had played one years ago at the Blackbird factory(thank you Joe). I hate to say it but I just couldn’t get to like the El Capitan enough to pull the trigger, at least that day and the Savoy is just too small for my taste. This store was well stocked with Rainsongs, of which I owned a couple but I played around for a while. Then, although the looks didn’t say “play me” I tried the Sable because it was the 1st time I saw one. I now own one, and the 2 rainsongs had to go to make room for it, but it is so worth it for me. Although I keep and play my wooden guitars the Sable is not just for camping and work travel, it gets played in the home as well, and really quite often because I just love the sound.
I also used to own Earl’s X20, a great guitar that he represented well, just the neck profile caused fretting hand pain for me so it had to go, I do still miss the sound of that one a little though.
The modern X20 and Sable are both worth a look, but since you liked the sound of the Touring maybe that would tend to indicate you would like the Sable sound too?
Good luck, and congrats on the improved playing!

Based on your requirements I would recommend the McPherson Sable. I currently own a Sable, Emerald X20 and X30. The Emeralds have a unique voice which I also like but the Sable does have that wood like tone that you're after along with great playability up and down the neck.

Read your post with great interest. I started at almost 80 just about 4 years ago. Now I am 80 and play ALL THE TIME. Can't keep my hands off my guitars. So I do understand - brother.

I now have both a Emerald X-20 and a Rainsong CO-WS1005NST. The X-20 is the more comfortable guitar for me to play even though it is a 14 fret neck but with a short scale. I like the neck of the X-20 better. The X-20 is also visually more interesting than the Rainsong which is a more traditional look and feel other than the offset soundhole. The offset soundholes in both do make for a more immersive playing experience IMO.

Tone wise, I think the Emerald is more balanced. The Rainsong is warmer and has a wonderfully rich low end without being boomy but it is a slightly bigger body than the X-20. I'll probably put the Rainsong up for sale. It's a great guitar that will do everything. I believe I'll prefer the smaller body size, ergonomics, and the more balanced tone of the X-20 for the fingerstyle playing I prefer.

Hi Eddie! I'm glad for you. I guess the moral of the story is that it doesn't matter when you start playing, as long as you start playing. Keep on keeping on my friend!

I got the Sable last week. I think I love it. This is the honeymoon period, but it seems to be just what I was looking for.

I immediately changed out the 13's for 11's (Thomastik Infeld AC111's) and it's a blast to play. Big, deep, comfortable sound. Comfortable neck for me. I understand now why it comes so highly recommended (not that others from Emerald, Rainsong etc. don't - they do).

It's heavy for an acoustic guitar, certainly compared to my Martin 000-28MD. I've not played a Mcpherson before this one but I read that they are all heavy. Some very heavy :-).

Thanks for the opinions AFGers they were very helpful!

Congrats on the Sable, you really probably could not go wrong. I found I didn’t like light strings as much on it and went back to mediums just yesterday so we shall see where I settle, all fun experiments. I too play mostly fingerstyle. I also find it heavy but like it so much it is my primary travel guitar in spite of the weight.
Enjoy that new guitar.
