Default Gear Masterlist info ask

It's been about 20 months since I compiled the lists for the AGF MEMBERS GEAR MASTERLIST. If anyone has additions, I'm happy to add them (that goes for previous contributors as well as those who did not contribute information the first time).

Just a reminder of the categories...
  • DAWs
  • Interfaces & Converters
  • SDC, LDC, Dynamic & Ribbon Microphones
  • Preamps
  • Compressors
  • Equalizers

Also, because it comes up so often, it's probably time to add a section for handheld (Zoom type) recorders. So if you're using one of those devices, please list the brand name, model number, and the price it sells for brand new if it's still available for purchase. For discontinued models, I'll take a look around to get some idea of the used price.

If you have something to add to the list, please leave it in this thread and I'll add it in a week or so.
Thanks.

Doug, does that belong on the interface list or would that be better categorized as a Zoom type recorder?

I think of it as a "zoom-like recorder". Not as small, but still very portable. I think it can act as an interface (as can the Zoom), but I'm not sure it does that as a multi-track. What I see online is that it acts as a 2-track interface. Haven't tried it.

Lazily, I didn't read as far as the part about leaving it in the thread. Sent a PM already. Oops.

Hi Jim,

I use a Tascam DR-05 handheld, right at $100.

Don't know if this fits, but I'm now using a Zoom R20 digital recorder, which functions as a DAW input interface or control surface, although I'm using it strictly for audio capture. I purchased new at just under $400.

Guess I’m still kinda new around here. What’s the purpose of the list?

I’ve put together a semi-serious recording setup, it’s probably too much to list and of limited interest to anyone else?

It's a one-stop-information-shop resource for those looking to jump into recording. It gives them some insight into what people here are using, who might be able to help them with an issue regarding specific software or hardware, it gives them options to explore, etc.

It also lists plugins that some of us have found to be invaluable as well as plugins that are suited for some more specific tasks/problems.

There is a pretty comprehensive selection of video tutorials. These were recommended by users here who found them helpful. I then reviewed all of them (that was a long week) in order to eliminate as much redundancy as possible. The tutorials run the gamut from how to treat a recording space to how to record acoustic guitar to fx basics and everything in between.

There are also tutorials on mixing and mastering that can help guide the beginner so they can avoid some of the mistakes many of us made when we first started out.

I created the list because in this subforum we were fielding a lot of questions that were mostly repetitive. The original purpose was to cut down on the questions about what daw and/or interface should I use, but over time I've expanded the list to include a lot more than was included when I first posted it. The list has been up for only about 20 months and it has over 27K views. That would seem to indicate people are using it as the resource it was intended to be.

Besides what Jim already said about the purpose for the master list . In general the " Record" sub forum here on AGF is not only an excellent resource but is a great discussion forum for those interested in recording.

The participants in the forum run the gamut from people just staring to think about recording, to casual occasional recordists with an iPhone or potable recorder,, to more serious recordists with either mobile or home set ups or both from entry level to medium price , to fairly high end and even some full time long time professional engineers. And the list reflects that gamut

I want to stay open minded about esoteric gear, but I’d have a hard time swallowing a potable recorder.

In his younger days, Kev worked the carnival circuit as a sword swallower. He became so adept, part of his act was trimming his toenails from the inside ...at least that's the rumor I heard.

First: TL;DR.

Second: Studio equipment (I’ve been accumulating this stuff for at least 25 years, always wanting enough mics and gear to record a whole band at once):

DAW: Logic Pro

Interface: MOTU 1248

Converters: additional 8 channels from Focusrite ISA 428

SDC mics:
• Oktava 012 (non-matched pair, circuits modified by different people at different times) with 2 cardiod, 2 omni, and a single hypercardiod capsule
• Mojave MA-100 pair

LDC mics:
• Sony C38b pair on drum overheads
• 3U Audio GZ251
• Microtech-Gefell UM70
• BLUE Baby Bottle (hands down favorite on acoustic guitars)
• Heiserman H47T
• Barbaric Amplification BA49

Dynamics mics:
• EV408 (3)
• EV 868 (kick drum)
• EV RE18 (gtr amp)
• EV PL20 (bass amp or many other sources)
• Sennheiser 421 (2)
• Placid Audio Copperphone
• Shure SM76 (2) (omni dynamics)
• Audix D4
• Beyer m201
• EV 457b
• University Sound US 660 (EV 660)
• EV PL95a
• Shure SM57 (have to have one, I guess)
• Beyer m69

Ribbon mics:
• Beyer m160
• AEA r92
• AEA KU5A
• Stager SR-2n

Preamps:
• 4x MOTU 1248
• 4x Focusrite ISA 428
• 2x Brent Averill API 312 (one needs repair)
• 2x FiveFish x-72
• 2x AEA TRP 500
• 2x RND 511
• LaChapell 983M

Compressors:
• Symetrix 501
• Chameleon Labs 7720
• IGS Alter 500
• Daking Comp 500
• Warm WA2A
• Weight Tank WT-COMP

EQ’s
• Maag EQ2
• IAA LH95
• 2x Aphex EQF-2

Link below: this was recorded live in my basement. My goal is to be able to record a band live all at once. Everything here is live except the upright bass, which was overdubbed later.
