Default S. Kinnaird: Engelmann/B&W Ebony 00 (Video Added!)

One of the great joys of our job is posting our builds here on the AGF. (No really.) But it brings us even more joy when it’s for an AGF member. This one is for a long time AGF lurker. Hopefully we’ll draw him into posting more as we show the development of this new 00 - an Engelmann spruce top with some Black and White Ebony.

Here’s a shot of his woods (sorry I shot the back with the inside out).

We’re really excited at where this design is going because it’s essentially a traditional black and white theme, but we’ve added some custom takes here and there to make it personal. I hope you follow along.

A couple wood shots to get us started.

First, sanding the sides. Look at that grain!

Bending over the hot pipe. It’s mesmerizing.

Putting it on the 00 form to set its shape.

Lots more coming.

That's mesmerizing, Ryan! One nice thing about playing a guitar made of woods like that is if/when you make a mistake you can just say you were too busy looking at the guitar to play the song correctly.

Wow, thanks everyone for the kind and enthusiastic words. Bob, we’re in the slow process of trying to get a website rebuild. In that redesign will be an updated models list and more current pics and options. One day...

Thanks Dennis. I hope he is because this one is looking great so far.

Here’s some back bracing shots.

Center seam:

Then rounded over and a little shellac added to it.

Gluing the back braces on:

And then all shaped and sanded:

Check back soon.

Smile Long time AGF lurker

Well, I'm the long time AGF lurker! Joined AGF in 2008 and followed a number of threads during the early years...the marketplace, fingerpicking, and finally found the Custom Shop! I had dived into the custom build side of things in 2006 when Bill Wise built me my beautiful Charis SJ, and then again in 2008 when Simon Fay built me his #7, another beauty. But, with a minor touch of Guitar Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) I was able to hold it at that and just keep watching the many builds in the Custom Shop, and dreaming. So, I looked at all these guitars being designed and built - starting with Dream Guitars, of course, and Guitar Gallery, and then going to luthiers sites. I kept coming back to the Kinnairds...there was something that really clicked in me with their work....and when I saw some BWebony guitars on various sites like Reverb and found myself thinking BWebony was really cool with the right set.

I had spent my life taking care of children with cancer and flying in F18's on the weekend in my part time job, so not much time for guitar. But then I spent last winter in Corpus Christi close to my son as my retirement neared. I followed Christy Cook's OO build closely. That's when I went through Nacogdoches and intended to visit Steve Kinnaird (but timing was off, so wasn't able). Anyway, by then Steve and I had started emailing, and I was pretty much hooked that I wanted a guitar built by him - AND after seeing so many beautiful guitars built by Steve and Ryan from all you GAS people (probably better known as patrons of the luthiers!). When he showed me the set of BWebony he had I was blown away, and couldn't believe that I would be lucky enough to be the one he would build a guitar out of BWebony for!

So, I am really stoked as someone put it, and still feel like it's a dream! Super excited! So far, it's been a great experience. Ryan and Steve are awesome, and let me know when I suggest something a bit crazy. I really want to showcase the BWebony, with a subdued bit of a classic look on the front side...look forward to interacting a bit more on AGF and eventually getting to know some of you, at least on-line!

Default Ticket to Ride

Thanks Jeff, for bringing us all along for the ride. I think this is the best reality show out there. I just wish I could convince Ryan and Steve to let me install a webcam so we can all watch. I’d even let them charge admission!!

Jeff, the look of this wood is going to make a very nice contrast to what I envision your Charis in African Blackwood must look like. Looking forward to seeing how this guitar turns out. Congrats on this project and for working with very talented builders!

Success! We have gotten Jeff to come out of hiding. We’re very humbled that he has chosen us to make this cool little 00 for him.

So let’s have some more pics...this time some looks at rosette construction. Jeff wanted our ball and lozenge rosette which fits the black/white theme well. But he wanted to add a little extra touch of curly maple purfling around the rosette as well.

Laying out the top:

Cutting out the ebony ring as a background.

Relieving the top to accept the rosette.

Basic ring installed.

More coming.
