Default White Whale piece

One of my favorite questions to ask customers. What's your white whale guitar? Something you owned but let go of? Something you've never even placed your hands on?

Let's hear it!

Never had one unless you count the Alvarez Dread which was given to me when a friend passed away. I really never used it. Eventually I passed it along to my grandson for his first guitar. He really didn't use it either since I bought him a Taylor 114e for his first "real" guitar.
Just a couple of weeks ago we got the Alvarez out. We put some new strings on it, cleaned it up and I'll be darned if it doesn't sound pretty good.
My grandson has been using it off and on lately.

Sorry - Moby Dick reference - what's a guitar you'd do anything to have the chance to pick up?

Awesome - doesn't get much better than that! Glad you've still got it around!

I'm thinkin' a transitional '39 Martin D-18!

Early 1-3/4" Nut, & later Rear-Shifted, Scalloped Bracing.

I wonder what happened to the D-28 I once owned. I bought it in the early 90’s from Mandolin Bros and traded it in on a OOOC-16 in 2004 at the GC in Naperville I believe. I did so because 1) I thought the skinnier neck of the 16 better suited my electric playing style, 2) I wanted on board electronics for open mics, and 3) the bass of that 28 was significant to say the least. I regret the move. Although I got good use from the 16, I eventually realized I wanted to play an acoustic like an acoustic rather than try to make it something it’s not.

The other guitar I wonder about was a Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster I bought and returned. It was supposed to be Cobalt Blue with a Maple neck and fretboard. It looked purple to me so I contacted Musicians Friend. They said I can send it back but might as well try it out first just to see. Well, it was probably the best sounding electric guitar ever built. If SRV ever played it, no one would remember Number One, it was that good. I couldn’t get past the purple, though, so back it went.

The thing about time is that it tends to make long lost guitars (and loves) better than they probably were. Lol

White Whale of a guitar?

Captain Ahab was insane with hatred and vengeance (because the whale had taken his leg) to the point he would sacrifice anything, including his crew and his own life, to sate his own lust for revenge.

“all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified and made practically assailable in Moby Dick”

Cedar/Black Walnut Larrivee OM-09

Rang like a bell. Played it in a shop maybe 18 years ago. Couldn't even come close to affording it at the time.

A low serial # Huss and Dalton TD-R. I got it in '99, and didn't like how the nitro finish would get sticky in the heat. It needed a refinish (actually a proper first finish), which would have cost about $300 at the time.

I traded it straight up for a Taylor W-10. I like the Taylor, but today, it's worth about $2200. The HD is worth at least twice as much.

A Ryan Nightingale. Just to name one. I've spent many hours drooling over my keyboard in the Custom Build section

In the actual events that the book was based on, the crew members were left stranded, starving, penniless, and driven to inhuman acts, so the analogy is a pretty good one.

In my head there’s a guitar that has such a sweet sound. I’ve never been able to find one that can compare. I’ve came close twice. One was a fluke Fender paramount series that for some reason just sounded spectacular, I’ve kicked myself many times for not buying it but money was tight at the time. The second was a 1973 martin D35 that I played this spring, I also didn’t but it. It sounded wonderful and played smooth but you could tell it was going to need a neck reset in the next few years and guitar center had a premium price on it and the sales man didn’t seem to want to negotiate with me on it. I’ve kicked myself a bit on not getting it but not as bad since it was pretty dang expensive
