Default Your favorite Beach Boys song and why...

After seeing the fab 4 all over the place, bout time for another GREAT band from the 60's and beyond. The Beach Boys. Best band ever. Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, Mike, Bruce, David and other band members..ie Blondie, made some great music. Their Music has stood the test of time and seems to get better with age. Early stuff is fun and sun while the late 60's saw a more mature, creative sound. The song Surf's Up does it for me..All hands on board for this one and you can hear it. Brian at his creative best IMO....Not heard much but total Beach Boys. Love to see a Brian Wilson Carpool Karaoke but doubt that will ever happen. No pun intended.

God Only Knows, because it's the greatest song ever written.

"In My Room"

... and pretty anything off of "Pet Sounds"

... except "Sloop John B"

Because Brian Wilson is a complete musical genius and Pet Sounds is among the best concept albums of all tim'e.

To me, "Sloop John B" hurts the concept ... it just doesn't fit well and Brian didn't write it.

I Get Around always lifts my spirits - when cranked up loud, the full majesty of the Wrecking Crew comes over, combined with the magical blend of those vocal harmonies makes for a sublime sound, & such a nifty chord sequence - 3 minutes of pop heaven..

"In My Room" ... I recall reading about the harmonizing of the song, I forget now if it was because of the 5 or 6 voices or what but they went into either 6ths or something and it's said to be pretty difficult to pull off vocally. But they sure did it.

"Caroline No." Some really nice writing by Brian.

(And don't tell the BBs I said this, but America's cover of it is better than the original.)

Surfer Girl.........

but nobody comes close to the Beatles musical library or cultural influence, they changed a generation.

FWIW Brian Wilson's "Smile" was a major disappointment, my opinion.

"In my room" has always been a personal favourite. However, although I know Brian did not write it, "Sloop John B" to me is the best Beach Boys song.

I play a version of Sloop John B in Carter style.
I know, technically it is a traditional song but most folks think of the Beach Boys version.

Yes, I'm a fan of the sad vs. let's go surfing and drive cars songs. So with that said:

--In My Room
--Warmth of the Sun
--Surf's Up

I agree with you. However, let's not forget that Brian was -- and still is -- McCartney's favorite songwriter. And Brian had a lot of pushback from other members of the group, in particular Mike Love, to not grow and keep on doing dopey surfer songs.

"Don't Worry, Baby," from the first beat sounds like a huge quantum leap for the band, the beginning of a mature approach to the popular song.

"Caroline, No," you could just say PET SOUNDS and you can throw a dart at any of the tunes.

So many more, but "Surfer Girl" and "In My Room" showed early on what type of songwriter we were dealing with.

If you've never heard this brilliant live version of "Surfer Girl" by Paul Simon, he does it like nobody else could. Just Wow.

I was never a fan of the Beach Boys, but I don't think this is an outrageous claim. It's a sublime song, and the record is a sublime performance of it. And I can't listen to it without thinking of someone I knew back in 1966, for whom I felt it could have been written.
