Default NGD: Gibson Wildwood Spec 1942 Banner J45

Well, that escalated quickly. After much research and the thread I started a few days ago, I zeroed in on getting a J45 or D18.

I called Wildwood this morning and talked to Ian and then Brian for a long time, and they both pushed me toward a J45. Brian and I discussed the merits of the Banner, Slash, Standard and even the Southern Jumbo. We zeroed in on the Banner.

Brian found a way for me to safely pick the best of the bunch with the help of Steve.

Long story short, I ended up with a Banner that hadn’t even been listed online yet. It is absolutely perfect and a big open G rings like a grand piano. The sound I had in my head comes out of this guitar. All of them were great, but this one was a cut above.

NGD days are great. Beautiful guitar. How did you come to choose it over the others?

The second guitar was a little more muted and it didn’t have the same level of overtones as the first if that makes sense.

The third was bright and strident, which in and of itself wasn’t bad, but it didn’t have the fundamental warmth of the first one.

The necks were all similar and I would have likely been happy with any. I played through some things I wanted to hear on each guitar.

It honestly took one or two chords on the very first one to say, “this is it.” They had 6 in stock, Steve pulled the best 3 for me to try on a stool outside, masks, distancing, etc. When I indicated the one I had picked, he said he also felt that was the best of the 6 as well.

That’s what I said with my eyes closed when I played it initially. Awkward.

So you got to play these outside the store? Cool.

Had the fun of playing a few of their shop custom slopes -- they were impressive.

Enjoy!

Yes, a bit of a one off thing. The showroom is most definitely not open.

Congrats. That looks to be a fantastic guitar. Love me some Gibson slope shoulders.

These are monster guitars with beautiful rich tone. I had completely written off J45s until I came across one of these. And the straight bridge looks good and makes so much more sense. Congrats! These are the ultimate modern J45.
