I used to live nearby sea (salted waters) and once had the deception to open a "new" set of string finding them already oxidized ! These were individually wrapped in these smalll paper envelopes, the whole set in a little box.
Now, I store my sets of strings in a small old fashion hard hand luggage. I moved away from water, but storing my repairing tools and strings in the basement, I still use this boxy luggage.

That was my thought. I buy strings that come sealed from the factory, namely GHS and DR. Corrosion-proof packing is a pretty great innovation in strings and I take full advantage of it. There shouldn't be a need to store strings under special conditions.

Depends on the string. Most manufactures, not Elixir, have eliminated the practice of putting strings in cardboard boxes and paper envelopes and have adopted this kind of sealed packaging...
...and those that don't either seal the strings, or the box.

When you open a fresh pack of Martin Retro Monels and you find this corrosion on the unwound strings you come to 2 conclusions.
1 - The Martin packaging is not as moisture proof as some other brands. 2 - Keeping your strings in a lidded container with a couple of silicon gel packs isn't that hard.

Nope, I've never done that.
Of course I live in the desert Southwest and even though we actually had 2-3" of SNOW fall in Las Vegas over the past couple days, it's very dry here. According to the hygrometer I keep on my desk where I practice/play it was 20% during a recent day-long downpour (we hit a record and got 3" of rain at the airport!!) I use Martin and D'Adarrio strings, both of which are in sealed plastic packages, so between that and living in the desert, I don't think I have much to worry about. But if I ever move to the UK, I'm gonna get me some of that desiccant and a plastic tub! Best, PJ
