If you can play chords as you say, some of the the notes are in the chord forms. For example, play an A major barre’ chord. Every note in that chord is in the scale in the key of A. If all you ever did was to play those notes in a variety of patterns with a couple of extensions you could solo with someone playing a song in A. For example, a ballad using A F#m D and E
