Kronbauer #150 Cocobolo/Bearclaw Sitka
I'm commissioning a Kronbauer that Trevor is really making good progress on.
It's a Mini-Jumbo with: Cocobolo Sides, Backs with sapwood, Headstock with sapwood, Split Backstrap Bearclaw Sitka top Flamed Koa Binding, Bloodwood purfling Koa-bound soundport Burl Maple Rosette, End Graft with Bloodwood purfling, Burl Maple Logo as well Florentine Cutaway 5-piece neck with Mahog-Maple-Bloodwood-Maple-Mahog Gotoh 510s Ebony Vine Inlay LR Baggs iMix I think that's what I can think of on the specs. Attached are some pics. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Bearclaw Sitka Top: It should look something like this when finished: Sapwood Cocobolo Back: The main body with the bracing complete: The headstock: Another possible headstock setup: Rosette: End Graft: Enjoy!!

Very cool, pangpang! That bearclaw sample photo you posted is of my guitar. I was hoping to have it before Christmas, but now it's looking like it'll be sometime shortly after Christmas. Luthier time is a form of torture.

I was quite inspired by the bearclaw. Originally I was going with Adirondack but then I changed my mind. Trevor seems to always prefer Sitka as it's abundant in his area.

Building mine made him stop. He said that Coco is very oily and hard to work with. The oil prevents him from using regular "guitar glue". If not careful, I believe Coco also runs due to the oil. It was a bit of a challenge. He said another Luthier try to sell his whole stash to Trevor because that luthier didn't want to continue working with Cocobolo. Maybe some luthiers here can explain the actual challenges...

Cocobolo also can inflict severe respiratory problems on folks who are allergic...and if you work with it long enough, pretty much everybody becomes allergic. I believe the term is a sensitizer.

http://www.scottallyn.com/images/kronbauer Trevor does seem rather fond of his sitka. I trust his judgment on that. Regarding the cocobolo, in addition to the things that you mentioned, the dust is also quite noxious and can cause some pretty adverse allergic reactions - bad enough to put people in the hospital!

That looks beautiful, pangpang77, I bet you can't wait to see that bearclaw pop out when there's a finish on it. When's it due to be completed?

wow, nice choices with the wood combos. very classy. i usually don't go for the "sapwood" thing but with the headstock, rosette and bindings this should be a stunner. you must be feeling great about it.
good luck with the guitar. bill

Cocobolo has stopped more than one builder, believe me. I read the "dust" is awfully toxic, it has a tendency to crack for no reason, hence the moniker "Crackobolo," but I'll tell you this: if I was EVER to commission or order another guitar, Cocobolo would be my choice for back and sides.
Of course, the above will not happen. I have my once-in-a-lifetime hand-built from Kevin Gallagher (Omega guitars) which is way above my ability level to fully expose. All I know is that it is an "object dé Arte" and rings like an uncracked Liberty Bell. I actually have two friends from "up north" that will likely drive down here simply to play it! As for Coco, I LOVE the look, but based on many a luthiers' comments understand why they don't like building with it. It can be unstable; it spews toxic dust that more than a few are very allergic to. I think if I went that direction, I would want a hand-built (not some production line--I don't think Martin even OFFERS it, do they???).

Cocobolo is Mike Baranik's (Baranik Guitars) standard wood! He has produced the most magnificent cocobolo guitars I have ever seen, and the build quality is truly 2nd to none. So, if you are craving the amazing sound and looks of cocobolo, check out the one luthier who seems to have truly mastered this amazing sounding and looking wood.
