real slow songs
I like to play George Harrison's song, "Cheer Down" on the slow side, I can concentrate on the lyrics then.

Being able to speed up or slow down is something new to me and also singing not always in a chest voice. I started out in a very structural Band situation. Both the guitarist and bass player had did time as studio players, so everything had to be just like the original, So since ive been playing solo its been a big relief to play it tje way i want too, faster, slower and play with expression, so playing songs slower helps me learn them faster and puts my spin on it sooner, even if i refurn to the same tempo. |

Another one I dig is “Sing Me Back Home”, which the Grateful Dead played at what I read described as the pace of a funeral march or something of the sort.

But on the other hand, if you play a fast song slow, you may find a whole second song inside the song.

Nice Nelson CCR cover!
I love to play songs slow. Yet most of the amateur pop bands I have been in seem to show their lack of vision in speeding up a few BPM, like a Las Vegas lounge act. Then there's the bandmates lack of listening, everybody playing all the time, two rhythm guitarists playing the same chord shapes slightly off time, too loud and not letting the frontman (or preferably) front woman's lyric melody to be the main thrust of what the band is trying to impart. I used to play in blues bands. They would usually do 1, possibly 2, slow minor blues instead of the major pentatonic shuffles. I loved those! The crowd seemed too as well. But the group leader was all about providing the proprietor "dance BPM". A good trend with Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile. One of my favorite Neil Young records for late night drives is Harvest Moon. A lot of potent slow tunes that set the mood. |

Speaking of Neil how about "Tonights the Night" album. Warner bros. wanted a new release and he gave them a new release. Recorded during a full moon in the dead of night with a sufficient amount of tequila. That was raw and slow and wonderful.

The song that I always liked to do as a ballad is "Early Mornin' Rain." Lightfoot did it in a sort of honky-tonk rhythm. I slow it way down.
I also like "Sporting Life Blues" slow and rueful.

I play most songs a little slow. I am not good enough to play them at tempo.
Speed does not come easily to me. |
