Those were awesome pictures! Thanks for sharing. For me, it's nearly a 6 hour drive from Canada but someday I would love to take the tour.

Most interesting ... did you smell the woods everywhere you went, like in a small workshop?

VERY cool! Thanks for the great report and pics. That visit is on my bucket list for sure. Got invited to the “Evening with Chris” last year but couldn’t make it happen. Maybe next time.

Oh yes. It's a pretty clean factory, but there is a definite wood smell. The lacquering area was tough to be around for long though and was moderately irritating my sinuses. Like a mixture of a car wash smell + open turtle wax container + spray paint.

Great series of pics. I am intending to visit someday and your pics really showed it wonderfully.
The combination of handwork and machine technology is nice to see. A lot of people disparage companies that use automation for being non-purists, but since everyone recognizes Martin as the originator, then they should be stopped in their tracks when they see all this.

Brendan, Thank you for posting such a wonderful photo tour of the factory. Your photo tour with captions is a perfect reference of what all of us can refer back to after we have visited Martin to remember the specifics of what we saw. I was fortunate in 2011 for the opportunity to have a personal tour of the factory. How this happened was a total surprise for me. I attended a Martin event in L.A. where I lived for most of my 72 years. Joe MacNamara the west coast Martin sales rep moderated the event. (I was new to guitars at the time.) I approached Joe at the end of the presentation and I told him I would be in NYC in August, which was three months away and would like to visit the Martin factory for the tour. He asked me for my email address and when I got home from the Martin event there was Joe's email to me asking for the date I would like to take the tour. I responded and the next morning I received a call from Scott at Martin who got my info and said he wanted to take me on a personal guided tour. I couldn't believe it! I had no connection with the music industry having worked for AAA in California for 40+years at the time. When I arrived at the factory the week after Martinfest Scot took me on a 2 1/2 hour personal tour of everything. Scott even took me to lunch at the italian restaurant across the street. I told Scott, who is now a VP, that I have no connection to the music industry etc. and was awestruck by his hospitality to me. He explained that if Joe M. asks for a personal tour for someone it is their pleasure to make it happen. That's a day I will never forget.
Thank you again Brendan for such a detailed photo tour of the factory. Bob Millner

Martin Factory Tour 2/22/19 with Photos
Very well-written and fantastic photos. I live in CA and will probably never get there so I really appreciate posts like yours that provide such interesting details. I especially like how you described handling the reimagined neck, as it really gives a sense of how it compares to the regular V. Your photos truly capture the nature of the place and the nature of work there. I might have liked seeing people’s faces a little more. One thing I always say when I see photos from the Martin factory: As a woman, it makes me proud to know that every Martin at some point passes through the hands of a skilled female luthier.

Martin 1985
I first toured the Martin factory in 1974. No string winders, no CNC, a duplicating machine pushed into a corner (it broke necks), almost dead quiet, mostly curls of wood instead of dust, and I took no pictures :~(.
So here is my next tour in 1985. Still no CNC, but I seem to recall noisy string winders.

I live about an hour away and have visited Martin twice a year since 2004 and I learn something new every time I go. There's a vibe in that place that just can't be described. |

Whoa, this started out a cool thread and just got way cooler with all the pics from the 70's! It's cool to see what has changed and what has stayed the same.
I took the tour this summer with my 9 year old who was just starting lessons at the time and we both had a great time. It seriously is the best factory tour I have ever been on. I want to go again and do the BTS one next. |
