Default Some more exciting news from Donegal!!!

I special-ordered an Emerald X30 with a Black Limba top and no electronics last January. I was later able to add a satin finish. This was supposed to be a very special 70th birthday present to myself. It's clearly not going to make it here by Monday 5/11, but I did get this message from Simon yesterday:

I was talking to Robbie our painter to see if he can come in next week and finish a few. Yours will be top of that list as soon as we can make it happen!

Regards
Simon

Congrats, that sounds like good news! Selfishly, I am hoping mine is also near the top of that list!

Any improvement is good news. I sent Simon an email about three weeks ago telling him that it was OK to put my custom X20 six string on the back burner, in favor of others salivating for their first Emerald. It is not critical if it gets to me in July or November. I'll get by (somehow) with the several Emeralds and other CF's already here until Emerald is back to a more normal production schedule. The stock green X20 which is my favorite daily player meets almost all of my needs and desires. [The only custom features I am getting are a 24.6" scale length and only 20 frets total. My left hand likes shorter scale these days, and the 24 fret finger board sometimes gets in the way of my strumming stroke - plus I never play above the 17th fret anyway].

As an aside I've had a 2006 Taylor GS-K (koa/spruce) for years and which I always described as my best and prettiest guitar. Taking it out to play on the back porch early this week and again yesterday afternoon, it simply does not sound nearly as good as I remember it, especially since I am now imprinted on CF guitars in general and my X20 in particular. It will get a few more chances before it goes up for sale.

I love the stock green! Have a green X10 level 2 received in January from stock. Its my daily player as well. It sounds great unplugged and incredible plugged in.
I really couldn’t be happier with it. Originally I was ordering a koa top but changed my mind at the last possible minute and don’t regret it at all. Don’t be afraid to order from stock.

Hi Earl - I definitely believe our fingers and ears "train us": i.e. the guitar you play the most becomes that by which you judge others.

I had an interesting Facebook Memory this morning: it was 4 years ago today that my first Emerald, the X7, showed up. I immediately liked it more than the RainSong Shorty I had; the sound, the feel, the playability. It became the guitar I played the most. We left for a seasonal boat job shortly after and the X7 was the only guitar I played for several months. Training. (imprinting)

Well, unlike you carbon fiber veterans I am sitting on pins and needles waiting my very first emerald X 20. I have heard about the shipping woes
but I’m encouraged that it shows my guitar is in transit. More importantly, it says it should arrive Tuesday evening at six. My 60th birthday is Wednesday morning. I have already been gifted a bottle of Buffalo Trace bourbon and a gorgeous Cuban cigar. I just need the woody.

It's true Jim - we get trained to a specific guitar's feel and sound. That koa GS was for a long time the yardstick by which I measured every other guitar, both for potential purchase and among the ones already at home. My long experience shows that we can hear very differently on different days, but this was more dramatic than I have noticed before. It cannot be attributed to my ear being radically different or the indoor/outdoor change -- it was noticeable indoors too, and I am not coming down with a cold or anything. This was a real Jekyll & Hyde situation, and a bit shocking. My X20 sounded fine both days, as did my Lucky 13.

I liked the koa outside on Monday and absolutely did not care for it inside on Tuesday - sounded like a guitar that I would never buy, no matter how pretty the wood is. That was a bit shocking. I played it again yesterday outside on the back porch swing and concluded that it was fine for bare nails finger picking, but the strummed tone with a Primetone pick was nothing like what was wanted. I will next try different picks from my V-pick sampler pack, among others. This guitar seems to be especially sensitive to pick choice. Koa can be a very bright guitar (something I usually like) yet the larger GS body gives it some balancing lower end power. Color me confused.....

Apologies for the thread drift.

Ruppster: fingers crossed for you, and Happy Birthday!

Happy early birthday, Ruppster! That is gorgeous! I hope the shipping timing works for your special day.

And, Earl, my buddy, I have no words of wisdom about your koa Taylor. On the occasions I pull out my 814ce, it always sounds good. But, I understand why you reach for the X20.

I love seeing before and after veneer photos. Especially with pao ferro, where it picks up so much orange from the finish.

Got the following from Simon @ Emerald Guitars today....

That’s just masking tape on the fretboard (in case you're wondering). This will now be taken through 4 levels of sanding, before the final satin coat is applied. I do believe I am as excited as you are to see the final result.
I have it on a wall filled with guitars, and i must say it stands out! Ill keep you updated have a nice day!
