Martin has widened the spacing on the OM-28MD to 2-1/4” from 2-5/32” on the Standard Series. They now call this the “Standard Taper”. It is the only MD with this taper on the Vintage Deluxe neck, which is definitely a low profile carve. It doesn’t sound like much but I found it very noticeable. I would recommend you try it because if you like this neck, the sound is impressive.

Like my OM 28 (18), sold a very expensive adi/ brazilian because I prefered the tone and playability. It was the least expensive guitar I tried that day and for me the best. I love it.

I chose the OM over an OOO for the volume/punch, and flexibility of the long scale. I'm glad I made that choice as lately I've been experimenting with tuning down a half or whole step to aid my singing (high baritone) or where the original is tuned down (e.g., Yesterday). The long scale on the OM enables me to tune down surprisingly well.

Kori...I own one "non-dread" size guitar...an OM-28 VTS from Jon. I understand where you're coming from.

The new OM-28 MD sounds very intriguing. How many here have played it? Anyone here own one? I'd love to hear comments! Kori, I hope I'm not hijacking your thread! (After all, it's still an OM-28)

I agree, I’ve been detuning a half step and using a capo on my OM. Giving me some nice things.

I've had mine about [OM28] about three years . It does sound great . not crazy about the spacing at the nut [wish it was wider], and as I've stsed before ,the high E string comes off the fretboard when I play barre chords!I always wanted one of these guitars since the 60's. But now that I have it... well , but it does sound fantastic!

It simply means that Martin has the option to change woods, depending on what they have a good supply of on hand at the time, without changing their spec sheets. Mahogany is usually used, but sometimes in short supply, so they substitute sapele, spanish cedar, or something similar. That's also why it's a good idea to view actual photos of the guitar you're buying. You can usually tell by the wood grain if it's mahogany or not.

Yes, pretty sure it's mahogany.

Ok, thanks. I'm not too big on neck woods regarding whats considered quality, or whats preferred. As long as its hard and smooth. Its already getting that smooth shine from playing a lot.
