Bookers Guitar by Eric Bibb

The guitar owned an' played
By the great Booker White
Found its way, by grace into my arms
He would call it “Hard Rock”
'Cos the body's made of steel
On th headstock he glued a heart-shaped charm

In a brown leather case, with green velvet linin'
It thrilled my soul to the core
Stuck on the side with old scotch tape
Was a list of the songs he's famous for

Booker's guitar's got a story to tell
Of hard-earned hope an' unshed tears
Booker's guitar rings like a bell
It's gonna keep on ringin' for a thousand years

The late greate Booker White
Sang straight from his heart
Everyone who heard him knows it's true
He'd spank that shiny guitar just like a drum
'Cross the Mississippi Delta, Europe too
Booker's…

Mighty Merle Haggard:

"Daddy Frank played the guitar and the french harp;
Sister played the ringing tamborine;
Mama couldn't hear our pretty music
But she read our lips and helped the family sing.
That little band was all a part of livin'
And our only means of livin' at the time;
But it wasn't like no normal family combo
'Cause Daddy Frank the Guitar Man was blind."

"Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk "

From Springsteen's Thunder Road.

I really like that song.

Mama's got a squeeze box
She wears on her chest
And when Daddy comes home
He never gets no rest

Cause she's playing all night
And the music's alright
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night

Default The Mississippi Delta Was Shining Like a National Guitar...

Me and my guitar. always in the same mood.
I am mostly flesh and bones and he is mostly wood.
Never does grow impatient for the changes I don't know, no.
If he can't go to heaven, baby, I don't want to go, no.
James Taylor

“The Mississippi Delta Was Shining Like a National Guitar“

I haven’t checked, but I think that line is from Canadian Colin James’ song, “National Guitar”. I’ve always really liked that song. Colin is a great, versatile player that dabbles in a few genres. I’ve seen him live a few times. Always a great show.

Tom...Tom...the line is from Paul Simon’s Graceland....released a decade before Colin’s National Steel....which is a great song in its own right...and Colin is a great player with a great voice...

Old Beat Up Guitar - Jerry Jeff Walker
Chorus
Didn't look like too much
Just a Roy Smeck Stage De luxe
But a lady she never fared as well
Who travelled through so much

Another from Paul Simon... from Duncan's Song:
Oh, oh, what a night
Oh, what a garden of delight
Even now that sweet memory lingers
I was playing my guitar
Lyin' underneath the stars
Just thankin' the Lord
For my fingers

Whoops! Haha, of course. Brain fart. NOW I can hear Graceland in my head. James’ song has no such lyric. In fact, I was even wrong about the title of his song. Double wrong! I did say I didn’t check. Probably should’ve.

Some more Paul Simon:

"Then I learned to play some lead guitar
I was underage In this funky bar
And I stepped outside to smoke
myself a "J"
And when I came back to the room
Everybody just seemed to move
And I turned my amp up loud and I began
to play
And it was late in the evening
And I blew that room away"

...the line does sound like it could be in the Colin James’ tune....it’s a very cool song that I hadn’t heard in years until I’ll you brought it up....so many fine players out there it’s hard to keep up with them...in any case the song is a perfect fit for this topic...here’s the chorus from National Steel...

Fire, fire from the inside
Rhythm, like a hurricane rain
Mercy, comes after midnight
While you’re washing me down with the sound of your National Steel
