Default Need Help From MAC Users

I am attempting to delete some preinstalled applications from my iMAC, which is running mac OS High Sierra.
I first went into Applications and drug the selected application onto the screen. I then changed the permissions to read/write for everyone and drug the icon to the trash. The trash accepted the app, but when I go back to the application folder, the selected app is still there.
I then attempted to delete the app via the Terminal. I typed in "sudo rm -rf" and drug the icon into the Terminal box. I received a prompt that I don't have permission after clicking return.
Anyone have a clue ? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Bradley you may want to check and make sure your account has admin privileges. Go to system preferences (under apple menu), then select "Users & Groups". Look for your username on the left side and make sure it says "Admin" underneath it.

Hi, the admin privileges are right.

Also, make sure you have closed the app before you delete it.

There are Open source apps that you can use to delete the app and its contents within library preferences etc. A good example is AppCleaner.

If you drag an app straight into the trash bin it leaves a lot of other files behind.
If you cant delete a specific app, it could be a malware type - Mac Cleaner is a good example. You need to search the web for instructions-its considered as malware and it infiltrates your mac system and cant be deleted conventionally.

If you drag an application onto the Mac Desktop, you create an "alias" which is a reference only. If you delete this alias, the app that it references will still be there.

What preinstalled applications are you trying to remove? As previously mentioned, some can't be. Is this a new machine under warranty or with AppleCare? If so Apple tech support should help you.

I also found AppCleaner to be the best of a variety of "TrashMe" applications I tried, including several paid versions of various programs.

AppCleaner seems best at finding associated files, and they always seem to be correct. They do however, give you the choice of viewing the name of each file before you take the step to remove.

That came to mind.

FWIW, there are utility programs for cleanup but in most all cases it's this simple. You need to remove corresponding content in the ~/library folder for what you delete in the Applications folder.

In Finder use the Go menu, put ~/library in the Go To Folder command and you'll have that hidden folder.

Everyone always keep in mind that backing up is not just for truckers. Have Time Machine backups on more than one disk, and fresh ones before you do a cleanup.
