Bug infested Fender
Did anyone out there end up with one of the power post beetle infested fenders recalled back in the late 70's?
Back in the late 70's a load of "swamp" ash was not thoroughly kiln dried and a number of instruments were built with powder post beetles in the ash. They were quietly recalled but I always wondered if some still exist. The bug trails could be seen under a clear finish, painted not so much or wood dust in the pickup cavities. On a side note "swamp" ash was a term given to the cheapest ash Fender could buy. It was not good enough for axe handles or furniture so it was almost worthless. Turns out it made good instruments and was lighter than top grade ash.

I never heard of that, interesting. Were there any noticeable tonal differences or was it just cosmetic? Surprising that they would be recalled if it was just cosmetic ... unless of course people started asking why.

Good thing that wood was kiln-dried - if it was properly air-dried and seasoned there probably wouldn't have been anything left to build guitars with...

This sounds like the old story about the Corvette that was parked in the woods and a guy died in it, so you could pick it up for a song.

Yes, but per some other threads recently, we should note that Eric Clapton played the solo not George Harrison.

I think the Smuggler Teles were mostly due to the weight of the wood they were getting. Some feel there an acoustic impact to it though.
