Default I got a code in my dose.

I'm mostly over it now, but I had my mandatory cold which, in spite of my best efforts, hits me once or twice in late winter and/or spring.

I couldn't carry a tune in a bottle of codeine for the last two weeks.

When I played with a band, we could cover for each other a bit to get through a night's performance. (We all had our own spray bottle of Chloraseptic back then which helped...a bit.)

For all you solo performers...

What do you do? How do you handle it?

Dayquil, Nyquil, Sudafed - whatever dries you out a few hours before performing. Orange juice (a gallon a day) until the symptoms subside.

Musinex, Flonase, a lot of saline spray up the nose and a ton of Kleenex. Actually use the saline spray all the time. Iím amazed how few colds I get since I started doing this a few years ago. Sore throat, trouble. Lucky for me I almost never get one. Hope this helps.

It all helps.

Nyquil doesn't work for me. Well, it works, but for some reason it leaves me feeling really loopy for the whole next day. Every thing I play would probably start sounding like Strawberry Fields. I'm not usually bothered by medications, but Nyquil just hammers me.

That's why I posted...I wanted to see other recommendations.

It's funny...I've been blessed...I can hardly remember the last time I've been sick. It's been decades. But a bout or two with the common cold is not to avoided no matter how careful I am.

Thanks.

I whole-heartedly second the recommendation of the saline rinse. I rinse my sinuses out twice a day and a whole lot more when I actually get a cold. In the past few years I've started completely losing my voice for about two weeks every time I get a cold. All you guys that gig steadily know that you can't cancel many gigs before you stop getting hired. I've found that if I do the saline rinse twice a day and take 1000mg of Vitamin C every day I can usually avoid getting a cold.

Another fan of saline rinses. I recently discovered a product called Alkalol nasal wash that you can add to the saline mixture. It does wonders to clear up my sinuses. Iíve found that using the Neil Med rinse bottles and packet with distilled water and 50 ml of Alkalol and doing it twice in a row really clears my sinuses out. Repeat as needed throughout the day.

Lot's of smart recommendations here about OTC meds to dry you up! If I may add that when you need to take any of them (antihistamines, mucinex...) you have to drink a lot of fluids. It can make for very painful cramping in the GI tract if you don't. (I'm not a doctor, I just played doctor as a kid.)

Not a performer but I just got over the worst cold of my adult life.

Seriously nasty cold. Multiple doctor visits and prescription symptom reliefs, etc.

Lasted over three weeks. My vocal chords are still literally injured (raspy and a sharp pain like a tear) from so much coughing.

Yeah, I probably did.

While not getting sick, I tend to beat myself up a bit with my activities...and age...So I guess that brings balance to the force.

You can also gargle with full strength Alkalol. Good stuff.

Be careful when using saline solutions. It is recommended that you use only boiled or distilled water.
