Microphone position for guitar amplification
Tomorrow I'm playing my first gig in years (outdoors farmers market). Singing while playing acoustic guitar or ukulele.
I will not be able to plug into an amp (no pickups on my guitars), but there will be microphones (hopefully on boomstands) available. How should I position the microphone for my guitar? By the soundhole, or by the body? How much distance from the guitar?? |

A good starting point is about 4-6" from the 14th fret (or where the fretboard meets the body). Dynamic mics you're going to have to be on the closer side. With a condenser mic, you may be able to have a little more leeway depending on feedback issues. Good luck!

I tend to have it near where the neck joins the body, angled so it looks at my playing hand.

Just don't point it straight into the sound hole, aim it towards the fretboard.
Aiming directly into the sound hole will create a boomy signal that is perfectly suited for feedback.

Had good success with halfway between where the neck joins the body and the sound hole (directional mic). You must start there and see how you like it.

I once had a player (who is also a soundman himself) ask me to aim the mic at his guitar's bridge, about 3 or 4 inches away, slanting in from the tailblock side. It worked pretty well in his case.

Are you sure they have a PA with multiple mics? (Always good to ask) Around here, the performers have to supply their own sound system at farmers markets.
