No Beatles? Ed Sullivan show would been off the air sooner!

No Beatles? it is unlikely this musician would be performing at this art show or have 3.4M views on YouTube.

Also, the combination of the voices of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, at least in my mind, is what created a lot of the early magic, McCartney's high harmonies in particular. So one guy singing unknown Beatles music, I think, would go nowhere in this current musical climate.

Still, the movie sounds like it would be fun. I'll look forward to watching it when it comes out.

Interesting thought! It's certainly true that talent, even talent that audiences appreciate, is not sufficient in itself to assure musical success. Things need to line up for that kind of success.

As to the movies exact premise, as best as we can gather from the trailer, yes you'd be missing some of the things that were part of the Beatles success as you point out, and nothing is assured even if you have all the things, but let's say that Ed Sheeran (a somewhat random example, he apparently cameo's in the movie) recorded Yesterday (today) as an song no one had ever heard. Solo voice and string quartet, similar to the famous record other than not McCartney's voice. Could it plausibly be a hit now? I think so.

I do agree, one of the odd things about the Beatles were those two great lead singers and wonderful harmonies. That's rare. Add a great bass player and I guy who could hang with the two great lead singers as a songwriter on his best days, and a talented producer/arranger who was game for anything. All and all, quite the package of talent. But yes, I can imagine them not being as "Big as the Beatles," as I did in my story.

No Beatles?

The Quarrymen would have conquered the world...

Or maybe Johnny and the Moondogs.

Yes, George Martin was a huge part of the Beatles success, but THEY wrote the songs and for the most part, they pushed him in the direction THEY wanted to go.
Without the Beatles, there are literally thousands of people who would never had made music afterwards. It's not arguable.
I for one would probably have not picked up a guitar.
I already am quite aware of the many members on here who are not fans.
Just jealous, I guess.
Wow, what can I had to this? Yes, there have been other great musicians before and since, but the Beatles changed the music scene forever. I can’t say that I wouldn’t have picked up the guitar if the Beatles had never existed, but I can say that for me, they were a musical awakening. I’d never thought of wanting to play the guitar prior to that life- changing night I saw them perform on the Ed Sullivan show. Music had never affected me that way before. Yeah, the world would have gone on without the Beatles, but it makes me sad to think of a world without them.

What if the Beatles never existed?

Would have saved me some embarrassment. I'm just glad cell phones didn't exist in 1965. As a result, there is no evidence that as a kid, I did an entire performance of Beatles songs in front of an audience on a badminton racquet.*

Bob

* Being the older brother, my big brother got to perform on a tennis racquet. Deluxe.

No Beatles? Paul Macartney would have auditioned for the Monkees gig and gotten the job over Davey Jones. OR he would have failed the audition and put a band to gather with Stephen Stills...

If the Beatles never existed there's a good chance John Lennon would still be alive.
