Default Sealing painted image under Tru Oil?

Hey All. I'm wrapping up my first kit build and am at 8 coats am really happy with the Tru Oil finish I'm getting, but I ran into a problem on the headstock...

Artist buddy painted a very cool lil tree on the headstock:

I put two coats of Zinseer Sealcoat over the image and then applied the TO...which ate the image. Turns out TO is about 50% mineral spirits.

So, stripped it back down and he'll paint another.

How should I seal it before restoring the TO coats?

Just a bunch more shellac coats?

Or if I spray a couple coats of lacquer over it, will the TO adhere?

What say ye?

Don't put oil over the lacquer either. Why not do the headstock face in a different finish? Gloss maybe?

Yeah, true: I don't need to oil the headstock face-plate at all -- could just mask it off well and simply/solely lacquer it entirely. ...?

You'll want to test the paint they use on a different board maybe. If you could get them to pain some stripes on a test board.

More coats of shellac sealer. I'd do 3-4.

Since Shellac doesn't eat the image just finish the head stock in shellac

I like Fathand’s idea. Just finish it in shellac. I like to rub out shellac with 0000 steel wool lubricated with wax. It gives it just the right sheen.

Oh by the way, make sure the paint is fully dry (like maybe a couple of weeks) before you put solvents on it. Even then make the first coat very light.

Good point: no point switching to lacquer if the shellac already does the trick.

I think that'll be the plan:

1) coat or two of shellac to seal over any Tru Oil still embedded in the headstock plate.

2) repaint image.

3) let cure.

4) mo' shellac.

Thanks all! Man I'm curious how this thing is gonna sound!
