Default Replacement bone nut : Glue or not ?

I had to replace some nuts with new bone ones I crafted.

They would keep in place by string pressure only, but string change becomes a bit touchy !

I was said I could just put a drop of nail polish to glue the nut in place : It did not work for me.

So, what glue should I use ?

Many thanks for your kind help !

I use a dot of Titebond. It's enough to keep the nut in place but not so much as to make removing the nut dangerous to the fingerboard/neck/headstock.

CA is a hazard in a bottle and once it gushes all over a job it's made enormous problems. In the right hands it's fine, but it's not something to use without lots of practice and tested techniques.

The thing about CA is that it has no sheer strength. That means a dot or two will hold the nut in place as long as you wish but a simple tap on the end of the nut with a block of wood will dislodge it when it is time to replace it. That is why luthiers like it for this application.

Bob, I agree.

True about CA's properties. I've been using it for nearly fifty years. But keeping application limited to a dot is a practiced skill, the thin stuff has virtually no surface tension. Thickened CA is probably a whole bunch safer to use. But on a nut, all we're asking for is that the nut doesn't fall out while we string up the instrument. I think there's no reason for more than the least dot of glue.

I would certainly not put more than a single drop since my concern is only
to avoid the nut to fall while changing strings.
Note : An almost finished bone nut I was crafting one slipped from my hand,
fell on concrete floor and broke !

Since English is not my mother tongue, could you say what CA stands for ?

Thanks a lot for your kind help, guys !

Default A couple of dots of wood glue…

…on the end of the fingerboard.

I put the glue dots on the end of the fingerboard to avoid lifting any neck wood beneath the nut during future removal and for easier cleanup of old glue. Wood glues such as Titebond Original don’t adhere well to the nut material and so only a light tap is needed to remove the nut.
