Default John Sebastian's Stephen Kinnaird SJ

Last year, I had the pleasure of acquiring three guitars made by Steve Kinnaird, one of them a custom and two previously built guitars.

I happen to be a big fan of John Sebastian, and I knew that Steve had sold him a guitar a few years back. A few days ago I came across the interview linked below. After the interview, Sebastian pulls out a guitar and plays an old Mississippi John Hurt tune. And the guitar had that iconic "K" logo on it!

The guitar he's playing is the same model as one of the three I bought, an SJ.

I thought some of you here might enjoy it. It's the last 2-3 minutes of the video.

Cool. Thanks for sharing. I too have a Kinnaird (CS model), and it is one of my favorite guitars.

I took the pic below trying to capture Lame Horse Guitars' stash that they brought to Woodstock in 2018 not realizing who the character playing the Gitjo was. I learned afterward who he was when he did a demo concert for Lame Horse. I ended up buying the Saddle Pal, and Chris and Jeremy Jenkins sent me a video of the demo with John Sabastian playing it.

I posted a NGD with this same content, but here is the video of his demo in case anyone is interested...

Thanks for the kind words, guys, much appreciated.
It was, of course, the highlight of our trip to Woodstock getting to meet John Sebastian. He is as gentlemanly as his sideburns are cool. What a nice guy!
Hearing him in concert in 2018 confirmed that he also has some serious guitar chops, and still is an entertaining performer. Do your kids a favor and introduce them to his music. They'll thank you for it!

Thought you might like to see this pic;

It's at the 2017 show. I might be the day he bought the guitar.

Hey lowrider, thanks for that photo. This was a bittersweet moment for me.
Once I learned that John Sebastian lived in Woodstock, my hope was that he would come to the show, and that he would drop by our table. He did both. However, I had just stepped away from the table (pit stop, probably) and missed meeting him. Ryan was manning the table, as you can see. When I returned, Ryan raved about having met John Sebastian, how he tried our guitars, how he liked this SJ in the photo, how it was too bad I wasn’t there, etc....
I was sick.
But! John returned the next day, and finally I got to shake his hand.
It was the next summer when he did a tour through Texas that he bought this guitar.

By the way, were you the one who snapped this shot? If so, many thanks!

Steve

I am confused, I thought the highlight of that trip was selling that OO on the right side of the picture to another very special fellow??????

Come to mention it, selling the 00 WAS the highlight of the trip!
Sorry I misspoke so completely.

No...wait...the true highlight of the trip was avoiding the Russian mob at the car rental facility in New Jersey. I felt certain they were going to break my knee caps. One little scratch on that car, and off to the river you go. But, as I say, we survived. Always a good end to a business trip.

Steve, I can tell you that John was at your table specifically to try that guitar. I talked to him briefly and he said that he just had to try that Kinnaird. He knew what he was looking for and it sounded beautiful!

Regarding the Russian Mob in NJ. They really live on Staten Island. They only go over to NJ to break knee caps!

Thanks for both insights. When we got back to the rental place, the mob had gone back home—I guess now, to Staten Island?—and as I say, the knee caps survived.
So glad John was “in the market”. Given his preferred musical style, I am still a bit surprised he wasn’t shopping for something a bit earthier.
But it spoke to him, and I’m glad.
