Default Steel wool for cleaning fretboard

What is the best steel wooo grade for cleaning the fretboard? I have seen 0000 and 00000 recommended.

Is it equally okay to use scotchbrite pads for this?

Thanks!

Have you seen this from Tim McKnight? It is a complete fret board spa day.

I use 0000 steel wool. It is messy, but a magnet stick does cleanup. Do not use around magnetic pickups.
I am sure there is a Scotchbrite pad that is equivalent, but the ones I have are a bit coarse.

If you want to use steel wool then get Liberon 0000. There is NO comparison to the stuff from hardware stores. I use Scotchbrite white pads but prefer 0000 steel wool in most cases.

Liberon 0000 steel wool

If you have magnetic pickups on the instrument then place plastic over them and seal edges with painter's masking tape to keep the steel wool away from them.

For mag pickups I cover in painters tape. Some bits will get caught on it so then you cover again with painters tape and seal it all in and then remove the whole tape bundle.

Someone raved about Liberon some time ago so I got some and honestly I find it to shed pretty much just like any old other steel wool.

I find the good old fashioned steel wool with soap embedded from your local supermarket does a more than adequate job of cleaning the frets and fretboard, been using the stuff for 20 plus years now.

That may have been me...

Liberon 0000 shreds and reduces to nothing much faster than the hardware store steel wool, but it is very uniform in texture and doesn't contain any of the oil that is present in the cheaper brands. The common grade steel wools are inconsistent in size and will produce surface scratches occasionally. I've been using 0000 steel wool for something like 40 years and now only keep Liberon on hand after trying it.

I also use the Scotchbrite pads, but they just feel odd when I use them. That's only my perception though. They seem to work fine if you have the various colors to work through.

Oh I see. I thought people liked Liberon because it doesn't shred. I know exactly what you mean by using Scotch Brite.

Default A thought

Down at my True Value I found some 0000 non-metallic abrasive 'steel wool substitute'. White in color, I'm guessing it is home-handyman packaging of the finest Scotchbrite, also white. I've been using that. Works for me. YMMV. Test first.
