Default Piano lesson book

I just inherited a Yamaha electric piano and know nothing about playing piano. Does anyone have a recommendation for a book for the newest of beginners?

If you go over to the piano world forum, there is an entire beginner's section where people discuss at length exactly this kind of thing.

As I recall, we can't post links to or in other forums, so you can just google "piano world" and you will immediately have the link since it is a major forum as active as AGF.

I played keyboard/piano on a few songs per set now and then while gigging with the band.

Have picked up an electric YAMAHA Arias 165 and learning more stuff.

Asked lady who sold me piano if they give lessons. She said yes. Traditional lessons, teaching notation. I don't have time or interest in reading the written notes.

In my experience, written notes, either printed on sheet music, or the tablature stuff for guitar, is just one person's interpretation.

Don't read shape notes. Have old music books I read guitar chords, listen to songs for inversions and notes.

Currently working on Billy Joel's Vienna, and She's Always A Woman.

You can also find tutorials on Youtube

I liked “How to play popular piano in 10 easy lessons “ by Norman Monath.
Shows you how top play right hand melody and left hand chords so you can play from your favorite fake books.
To make it easier you can also get the key stickers so you don’t have to hunt for the key when beginning sight reading. These stickers are available from Amazon and many other places.

Do you know what style you want to learn?

If not, I suggest a book like 'Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course', or another one from the same publisher - they have a lot of variations with the same material inside.

You'll learn the theory too, and reading music. Well worth getting started on that from the beginning

Sorry I'm late but instead of stickers for your keys you should order THE PIANO RAKE also available from Amazon or their website.

As for books you might also look at online learning from pianote, playground sessions or piano in a flash. After reading reviews and trying samples of these courses I chose Piano In A Flash. These courses teach you how to play popular songs from the 50s to now. If you want to play classical look elsewhere.
