Clear nail polish...
Does it help prevent the chipping and cracking? Just curious.

Update to this post! Just now realized it was under the "Classical" section. LOL.
Clear nail polish may work for nylon strings and all I initially wrote below is with respect to my experience with steel strings only (although the tip about super glue i learned from a classical player): I've tried Sally Hanson Hard as Nails and it just comes off. I use a type of frailing technique when strumming. Since the top of my nail hits the strings it isn't practical for me. I've found that super glue gel you can brush on and file down works better to fix/prevent cracking. Much more durable for my tecnique. I've not tried it yet but I also read using acrylic powder or baking soda works with the super glue trick to add strength to the application.

After trying a variety of coatings, hardeners and fake nails, I began to use hoof cream after reading about it online. I apply it to my nails using a small brush one or two times a week and haven’t broken a nail since. I don’t know this for a fact, but I believe it actually makes the nails more supple and therefore less prone to cracking and chipping. Either way, it’s working like a champ for me.
