Default How Close The Fires Were To Me

These satellite pictures show just how close the bushfires came to the town of Eden, New South Wales where I live.

The town can be seen in the upper half of Twofold Bay - the woodchip mill on the opposite side of the bay has 75,000 tonne on fire - it's still burning.

The smoke from the Australian bushfires drifted over New Zealand and made it to South America - it is now heading back to Australia after circumnavigating the globe.

My wife and I were evacuated to the town of Merimbula on Jan 3rd - our 39th Wedding Anniversary! - for 2 nights where we slept on the floor in between poker machines of a Returned Soldiers League club.
They were marvelous and looked after everyone.

The town is covered in smoke again from the woodchip mill fire as I type this - I have my guitars all stored in their cases and don't plan on taking them out till the smoke is finally gone.

A report from 2 hours ago reads there are currently 85 bush and grass fires burning in the state of New South Wales with 30 of those expected to be contained.

I can't imagine what you've been through. I'm deeply saddened by the loss of human and animal life as well as the cost to the environment.

Your great country will overcome this, and come out the other side better.

So glad you are OK.

I'm sorry and saddened for all the loss around you. I can't imagine the stress you have been through. And evacuated on your wedding anniversary?! I hope that turns into a great memory!

Hi Bruce,
I hope you stay safe. I can’t imagine the stress you and your townsfolk are living with.

We had a lively storm come through, just stopped in the last half hour or so. Got 17mm (about 3/4") in the gauge at home. Not enough to stop these fires that have been teasing the ranges on our western border but enough to give them a pretty solid setback. A nice way to end the day for a change. Have you been getting the promised showers & storms down your way Bruce?

P.S. That's the first time in about 6 weeks we've had any more than a couple of mm fall & even that's only been on a couple of occasions.

There was a sprinkle last night but that's it.
We had a good break from the smoke for 2 days but today was a shocker - house shut up but hey, you know about that in Canberra!

I see where the title of worst air quality on earth shifted from Canberra to Melbourne this week.

I go to an American lady masseuse monthly and told her of my concern for folks in Oz. She has lives in Sydney for three years, and knew Eden well.

She was horrified that you had thought to stay as she said there was no way out but through the bush.

see, even an American lady from Seattle who massages an old Englishmen have been concerned for you!

I am grateful that you and your home are, seemingly, safe.
I am now concerned for my nephew who lives in the east side of Melbourne.

As a fan of F1, I know that the first race is scheduled in two months in Melbourne and wonder how they could possibly put it on with so much damage, air pollution and, presumably, an ongoing threat.

The media in the UK is full of the threats of world wide changes and the current plight of Australia will at least draw attention to the challenges before us all.
