Default Just Discovered PRS Silent Cable.

This may be old news for most of you, but I just bought a new guitar cable made by PRS that immediately stops any signal to your amp when you unplug. No loud pops or humming if you forget to mute or turn your amp down before you unplug. I am starting a weekly open mic in a local bookstore and was worried that some performers might forget and unplug their guitar before I had a chance to mute or turn the volume down. Problem solved. Sorry, I'm new to this and got excited when I found this silent cable.

if I understand it correctly, there is contact inside the plug barrel and when you pull the plug you first separate the switch contacts, then the plug pulls out of the jack. When you insert the plug it slides in first then you push further and it makes contact at the switch point - a clever design.

Yes, exactly! And works perfectly on initial trial. Not cheap, but quality cable.

I love PRS cables with the silent disconnect plug. Once I discovered them I bought four 10 footers — two straight and two right angle — and all my fancy Mogami Golds went into storage.

Thanks for the heads up... I’m going to have to invest in these! For home and the church!

If you can use a soldering iron, you can make these for massively cheaper than you can buy them. Redco sells these connectors and bulk Mogami cable for a fraction of the cost of premade cables.

Take your pick. I use amphenol connectors almost exclusively in all my cable builds.

Yes, that's what I'm using for about 3 years. They're the best choice

Which of their cables do you use for the plug ends?
Can their mic cables be used?

They have many choices and I'm not familiar with what would work best with the plugs.

Thx.

Looks like this company provides a less expensive option for silent cables.

(I have no affiliation with this company.)

I use Mogami 2524 for all my TS instrument cables. It is reliable and in my opinion the best shielded/lowest capacitance combo out there. There are cables with lower capacitance, but their shielding doesn’t compare. Canare recently sent me a sample of their new dual pair instrument cable that has piqued my interest. It basically has 2 braided pairs for redundancy and higher signal fidelity. May be snake oil but I’m going to make a few cables and take some measurements to find out haha.

TLDR; use Mogami 2524. They sell it at Redco as well. Also important to note for those wishing to make a silent cable- you only need one end of your cable to be the silent plug. Just put a standard TS plug on the other end.

I will say- I have never made a silent plug (don’t really have a use for them) so I can’t vouch for any of these connectors but of the hundreds and hundreds of cables I have made, amphenol has become my choice. No affiliation with them other than I use a lot of their product haha. Happy geeking!

PRS uses Van Damme cables. I am told that they are superior materials to many and popular with many performers. I dont know enough about the subject to comment either way. The PRS Silent Cable I just purchase seems to be of hi quality and performs well for me. It does look like you can make your own for 1/2 the cost if you are handy and buy the suggested plug as mentioned above. Either way, I am thrilled to have discovered this silent method of unplugging/plugging.
