It’s not for everyone. Especially if you have a limited budget. Someone mention purchasing used which I recommend as well. Keep in mind the small size and all you get with this mixer compared to everything else. Tone match presets, compression, delays, reverbs, parametric eq, standard eq, scene savings, etc. Can also be used as a recording interface. Not your average mixer.

I’ll stick with my Yamaha MGX 10

I've been thinking about replacing my analog mixer with this:

under $500

Allen and Heath ZED 10FX

I've used this little mixer as a swiss army knife for as long as they've been available. They sound great, have phantom power, sweepable semi-parametric midrange EQ, channel preamps optimized for direct acoustic guitar signals, and have some pretty decent reverbs and tap tempo delays. Also USB recording capability.

over $500

BOSE T4s

Even more FX and EQ than above, plus small footprint, guitar tuner, ability to save scenes, etc

I already have the MGX 12, but I think it is overkill. Looking for a four channel very, very straightforward but good mixer with phantom power.

Do I simply return the MGX 12 and replace with the MGX 10 or is there a better brand out there in compact passive mixers? If I only ever gig (even with the full band) with the column array and maybe a single powered speaker, do I consider the expanders like the Fishman SA 330 expander, or do I simply get the separate mixer.

Thanks,

Tars

Personally I think the "array" is overkill from a financial standpoint. The reasonable quality ones are north of 1k and you can buy a pair of these right now for half that!

I'd keep the MG12XU and buy a pair of the Alto's and call it a day!

Sale is on for another 36 hours or so.

Definitely - they have it on the Stompmix, only $70 more, but they’re sold out - not including it on the lighter-weight unit is a real oversight -

I have a pair of 8" Altos and I'm very happy with them.

Add a pair of these and you're set:

Bingo. This little mixer is what I’ve used for the last 10+ years and has never let me down. Very nice clean punchy sound. I go from this to an LD Systems Maui 11 G2 array and love my sound. Simple and effective.

I have a 12 ch. Yamaha MG12/4FX - built like a brick house and the built-in efx from Yamaha sound just great. They have smaller ones too - worth a look.
