Default What's the difference between Les Pauls?

I've been trying to figure out the major differences are between all the Les Paul models. Of course, there's obvious top differences and adornments...but what's the real significant differences between all the models? Does anyone know if construction methods are different?

Construction-wise, the differences range from different neck profiles like the slim-line version on some of the 1960 classics to the baseball bat sized '58 reissues; to body chambering; to maple top depth; to quality of maple used for the top, etc. Also different models have different pickups, every thing from the burstbuckers, to PAF's, to '59's, to........

It's a minor can of worms, but once you understand Gibson's game plan and order, it's easy to understand.

hope that helps,

ky224,

Check out this link for all Les Paul questions. They have a FAQ section that will answer all your questions.

Just as good as this forum.

Most differences are minor however the Historic's seem to have a bunch more mojo going on. The necks are way bigger and have the long neck tenon that extends into the body a bit further. Resulting in more sustain and thump. They are also finished in Nitro which is supposed to be a bit more better.

Check out the '57 Goldtop and '57 Customs for the most bang for the buck. Rumor has it they are getting a price reduction for '03.

Despite their differences, they have one deficiency in common-they are not strats!
