Question Martin Model numbering system?

Can anyone explain or point me in the direction of somewhere where I can find out the numbering system that Martin use?

I have had a look on their website but can't seem to see much difference between most of the D models - they all seem to be sitka spruce / Indian Rosewood as far as I can tell.

I mean, whats the difference between a D28 and an HD28 etc etc etc.

Completely confused!

Try this:

Makes it all clear as mud.

Kenny, look a little closer at the specs. The back purfling is different and more importantly the bracing is different. I believe one is scalloped and one is not.

Thanks guys. Starts to make sense!
I'll need to make a note of that page. confusing for novices.
At least the Taylor systems makes a bit more sense!

28 is the appointment level. It goes from 1 to 50 like Taylor's 300 to 900. D means dreadnaught. Like the 10 in a Taylor number.

H refers to a vintage bracing which gives the guitar a different tone. There is also a cosmetic difference with H but the main difference is mostly bracing.

H means herringbone ... V means vintage

The difference between the D-28 and the HD-28 is the binding material and rosette ... I think the tuners are different as well, but I'd have to go look to check ... if they are different, the D-28 would have the enclosed tuners and the HD-28 would have open tuners.

Default D-28 vs HD-28

There's another important difference between the D-28 and the HD-28 (I'm fairly certain): The HD-28 has scalloped (pre-war)bracing.

This is indeed the main difference between the two models. There are cosmetic differences as well, but they don't effect the tone at all.
