Default "Papalina Lahilahi" on a CA OX

Thanks to an AGF acquaintance I've had a chance to try out a CA OX these last couple of weeks. I've really enjoyed it, and finally got around to doing a video clip with it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqzDWMBP2gk

The song is an old hula called "Papalina Lahilahi" or "Dainty Cheeks." I've played it many times for Lynn's dancing, I kinda went for it in this improvised instrumental version.

My Zi8 is in the shop, but my Sanyo Xacti HD2000 just came back from repair so I set that up as the main camera. This cam has lots of great manual settings and I intend to learn how to use them by setting them to all the wrong settings first. I put my Panasonic Lumix ZS3 up as the closeup cam. It has a very wide angle lens so it was easy to catch both hands. Even though the Xacti has a mic input I used a Zoom H2 for audio. The preamps in these consumer cameras just leave a lot to be desired. Apparently this is true quite a way up the scale. I tweaked for EQ and volume in Adobe Audition, edited video and synced audio in Premiere Elements 7.

Not bad guitars. I just got a Cargo for my son. Not a woody sound but also not a "plastic" sound. They are a little bit one dimensional tonally but still not bad.

Love your playing as always, Fran. Sweet tune, great smile at the end.

What's up with the Zi8? Covered under warranty?

Great video, Fran. You're getting dam good at this. The playing is a given (for you ). But I love everything about the video. Nice backdrop; great color contrast; love your smiling countenance; nice flipping between shots; love the swaying motion of your body to the music.

Very nicely done.

That's a very pleasant tune, Fran. The playing is excellent and I'm always impressed with your production values in both sound and video.

Thanks for sharing. More to come I hope.

Well so far it appears to be covered under warranty. It's been at the depot about a week, so I'm hoping that if they haven't called it's good news.

Honestly, I wouldn't feel bad if they told me I'd damaged the unit. I had a lot of fun with it but beaches and rainstorms are hard on camcorders. I'm actually saving up for a waterproof, shock resistant, Fran proof cam for our next trip to Hawai`i.

A luthier buddy dropped by and we came to the same conclusion, Rick. But the difference in this case is very small, and may only be significant to the player. When I did a blind test for my wife and a friend they both went for the carbon.

Thanks, Marshall. This Sanyo Xacti is a lot of fun to shoot with, because it's got settings <grin>, but I think I picked the wrong ones that time. There's a lot of noise in the background and I blew out the highlights badly (don't I sound like I know what I'm talking about <grin>).

I have tried in the past to do fades between camera angles, but two things have sent me in the direction of quicker cuts - first the slow gradual change over the whole image drives high compression video codecs crazy and they usually do a bad job of playing them, and second I see much faster cuts in most professional editing.

Thanks, Mike. About as far from "Dracula and Friends" as one could get, eh?

You're too kind, Frank. But I agree that "Papalina" is a charming tune. It's an extremely cute and appealing hula as well. I'm practicing a lot so I can stop looking at the lyrics or the guitar and watch the dancing, but I've got a ways to go.

On the video end of things, I'm enjoying the learning, that's for sure. I was just musing on this business of trying to figure out a new (to me) technology/medium/art/craft thing. Reading helps, and looking at other works helps, and taking lessons helps, but nothing helps as much as executing projects, lots of them. Abstract ideas get concrete a lot faster when we make our own mistakes, so I'm trying to make them all.

That means shooting lots more video.

Fran

Fran, I had to laugh when I read that! I can't imagine that I will ever be practiced enough to not lose my focus on playing the guitar while watching a hula dancer. I might be able to keep the rythmn going, I suppose.

Hi Fran:

That is a lovely song. I really like the melodic "feel" that the tuning creates. Thanks for sharing it with us, and have a great day!

Thanks for posting. This tune is so laid back it makes me feel like I am on vacation. Nice and relaxed playing, too. You make it look so easy.
