Yeah, I'm afraid I could never enjoy Richie Havens delivery.

Look closely. He's doing more than just barring across the entire fingerboard. While his technique is extremely limited there are some other variations he's doing as well, though entirely unconventional. But whatever the limitations on his playing are his voice sure makes up for them.

...if you’ve never seen Ritchie Havens in person you can’t understand just how dynamic a performer he was....i’ve seen a lot of amazing performers over the last fifty years but no one brought it like Mr Havens...spontaneous combustion seemed a real possibility when he took the stage...

...as far as his technique goes...limited is not accurate....the thunder is always in the right hand...(or the left if you’re a leftie).....yep he had the thunder...but he could harness that thunder and play sweet and tender enough to make angels cry....

I always thought how Charlie Parr uses his thumb for strumming was unusual... and awesome.

Check out 1:24 of attached to see what I mean, but really the whole thing on him is really good

What the hell is her right hand doing? She has NO technique AND her guitar is buzzing...

...sounds good though.

I'll see you a Richie Havens and raise you a Tony Melendez...

I think her technique is quite clear: strumming and picking at same time. The low E is tuned down to C (?) and the guitar is tuned to an open chord. Very effective I think. She always had a very loose and free style. Her guitar playing was often discounted bc she was a pretty singer/songwriter but lots of her early songs, before she brought band into the arrangement were what we call fingerstyle now.

Check out the early stuff:
Morning Morgantown
Ladies of the Canyon
The Circle Game

She has been such a tremendous contributor to pop music and was not confined to one style. The album Hissing of Summer Lawns was and is absolutely genre-breaking and she got lots of heat for releasing such a radical record. This and Court and Spark were for me iconic records of the time that turned people's heads and forced artists to step it up.

For those who have not paid attention to Joni Mitchell's deep and original musical contribution, spotify is your friend.

Oh yeah, she wrote a song called Woodstock which festival Richie Havens he is often associated with. Not trying to hijack the thread, cuz Joni was nothing iof not unconventional.

I always loved Joni's right hand technique, sort of like a jazz drummer, shading the rhythms. A lot of her mid to late period playing was very idiosyncratic and surprisingly difficult to emulate. The way she uses her open fingers on an upstroke - nice!
