Default plectrum dilemma

I'm looking for a plectrum that will not break easily and yet will deliver a crisp clear sound ..

the nylon plectrums last long but the sound they produce are pretty muffled.

the taylor picks produce a nice sound but they break easily

solutions anyone?

I like the Clayton Ultem picks. Haven't broken one yet and even the thicker gaues give a nice crisp clear sound and more volume than others I've tried. I got mine from Musicians Friend and First Quality Music Supply carries them.

Fender medium. They wear down but I have never broken one and I'm heavy handed.

I use the Clayton Gold Ultem's .80

Try some different guages. I rarely break strings and I attack the guitar pretty briskly.

I prefer the tone of these picks and they don't wear out quickly or break.

I like the Dunlop Tortex orange (63mm I believe). They don't sound to dull to me.

They're my choice for strumming - bring out the jangly character of acoustic guitars. For fast single note riffing stuff they can be a bit sloppy, as they take time to snap back into position unless you hold them close to the tip that strikes the string.

Real tortise shell (if you can find them) is still the top choice among many in the bluegrass crowd. I've got one - sounds great, it is pretty heavy.

Other than that, I like the Dunlop picks too - I use the green ones (forget what the exact thickness is).
