Default Help me ID this Spruce slab!

Got a nice slab of Spruce (for free)! Trying to ID the variety...maybe Adirondack? Never seen a ‘pinkish’ band stripe like this before...

If it's spruce - Sitka..... But I can't see medullary rays because of the pic - so it's hard to tell ..

The thing that throws me off is how thick the sapwood looks. Many pines have dark red heartwood kinda like that and typically thicker sapwood than I am used to seeing on spruce. The difference is that their medullary rays are not prominent unless it's perfectly cut.

The rays are more evident on the right side so i'd guess it goes off quarter to the left. That's pretty sweet though what ever it is. Is it 1in thick? You should be able to get a few sets out of it. If you have a near by university with a forestry department they might be able to help you identify it. Otherwise it's not an easy task. If you knew where it came from that could at least narrow it down.

Definitely not pine. It’s very lightweight, when working with it has the characteristics of Spruce.

Could be Douglas fir. Just seemed too light.

Doug fir has a distinctive resinous odor. Mountain grown fir is lower in density than coast grown.
If it is spruce, I'll bet it's Sitka. The dark band may be seasoning defect, or from a log that has lain for a long time.

How about Lutz? The streaking and pitch pockets look like it could be Lutz, but the safe bet is Sitka. Any more provenance about where this came from that you could share?

I say Sitka also, does not look like the Lutz I have. My pitch pockets are much bigger.
