Barry, sorry to hear about the sore fingers. I say do whatever you need to do in order to play as free of pain as possible, whether it means lighter strings, smaller guitars (for shoulders), different nut widths/neck profiles, etc.
Looking forward to your review of the new strings. |

you could capo on the second fret ( like a 12 fret guitar) and tune it down to standard. plus use lights ( extra lights for 6 string kinda suck IMO )

I’m ten years younger than you.
I can squish open a walnut once or twice with my grip. It’s been measured to over 130lbs crushing force when I worked with Occupational and Physical Therapists. I use the lightest strings I can get away with on all my guitars. I actually prefer 12-53’s over 12-54’s. But I have discovered 12-52 balanced tension Nickel Bronze strings. They are quite nice.

Rick Beato did a full study on this and you can find it on youtube. He had pro engineers record acoustics with all gauges.
Guess what> No difference at all. So play extra lights if you want. Play the lightest strings you can get. Don't listen to the thicker is better hype. Its not from a real test, scientific point of view. Feels different to you because you are close to the instrument. To someone on the other side of the room ....... 10s, 11s same as 13s |
