Although I didn't start there, I ended up being a huge fan of all-mahogany guitars. I used to also be a fan of 00 12 fret guitars and there was a time when I owned two Santa Cruz 00 1929 models that were excellent.

But then moved to larger 000 14 fret body guitars and so got away from all-hog. Then about a year ago I stumbled on a brand new custom shop Martin D-1 12 fret dread in all mahogany and it was love at first sight but obsession at first strum!

Recent convert to all mahogany: I bought a Vintage (brand, not age) Gordon Giltrap 00 sized new in July and was so impressed with the sound, when I saw a second-hand Faith all hog slope dread in September at a good price jumped on that too. Less than £600 for the two in total and I play them as much as my Collings, Avalon and Taylor.

Here's my Guild D-120C. The first thing I did when I got it home was to take off the pick guard. I also eventually replaced the original tuners with the tuners from my Gibson J-45 (straight drop in).

Funny, but I still think of my beloved 000-15m as a small-body guitar.

Any All Hog Fans Out there?

I have a Taylor 512ce L10 all mahogany Grand Concert. It was a Limited Edition in 2005. Unlike many Grand Concerts, it sports a standard 25.5" scale. I tend to favor rosewood guitars, but this one was too good to pass up. It is also my only cut-away.

Right now, it is tuned to DADGAD and really excels in this role. Great guitar.

For what it's worth, I fingerpick all my instruments using my nails as picks.

Don

I have owned the Collings 00-Mh and it is a great guitar, I prefer it to the Santa Cruz 1929 for everything but straight up blues - the Don Edwards model is quite a bit more versatile (while the same size) does not compress as easily and has quite a bit more comfortable string spacings than does much tighter 1929. The downside is that the DE is quite a bit more expensive at new pricing.

You could also consider a Mahogany Goodall or Froggy Bottom - both are more romantically voiced than the "vintage" style voicing in a Martin or Santa Cruz.... the Collings falls more into the "modern" or "romantic" voicing than the Santa Cruz or the Martin so you might find them "less different". Still both the Froggies and the Goodalls have their own magic and they are certainly in the same category guitar as you Collings. Both the Goodalls and the Froggies in all Mahogany 00s are going to be much harder to find and quite a bit more expensive - but they have an all Sinker Mahogany Froggy 00 at Eddies right now that is superb and Matt has a video of it on Youtube. Plus, I've purchase several times from Eddies and Matt is good folks.
Great information on all-Hog guitars. Most of us won’t be around in 80 years. I’ve started a thread some time back asking why there are no torrefied Hog or Koa top guitars. Some luthiers may have tried it but there are only very very few on sale in the market.

That's a lovely $30 guitar - that's equivalent to spending about $450 today. So just how much would Martin want to make someone one of these now!!!!!!

(Clue - the 00-17 lists at $5,999)

When I began playing again, I was convinced that I would stick with rosewood guitars, and preferably dreads. That lasted about 6 months until I picked up a D-18, and then an 000-18 and an 00-18. Played a vintage 0-18 the other day and I believe that will be my last guitar for quite a while. Really enjoying the smaller bodies and the shorter scales. While I have a Collings OM, it isn't a hog and I have never played one

If..if..they could get the TONE of this little old guitar in all the new ones, they could make considerably MORE!
