I've seen a few of my guitar heroes in concert but never really got to talk or take pics with any of them.

I've met 3 of mine. I've met Hank Garland, Toy Caldwell and Waylon Jennings. Unfortunately they are no longer with us. I guess Waylon isn't exactly a "guitar" hero but he's still a hero of mine.

Yes and No.
I have met, and eaten pizza with, Michael Hedges. He was just a really nice down to earth guy. Some of them just leave way too soon. I have not yet met my other guitar hero, Bill Frisell. But I have met his former guitar teacher, who still plays here in Colorado now and then. Someday, maybe.

You know - I haven't really met any of my heroes, but I have a good story that you might enjoy about a friend of mine. First off, my friend - Fred - is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. The guy's amazing. Well, several years ago Phil Keaggy played a local church. Fred was a very involved member of the Worship team. After the show they got to chatting and went to Denny's to eat. Well, during the dinner it came up that Fred was working on a project at a local studio. So they went to the studio and fired up the equipment. Phil jammed on one of Fred's songs, doing several lead solo parts. I've heard it and seen the video Fred made while they were there. Of course Phil makes this FREAKY lead sound simple. But, in my opinion, what a great story about a real stand up guy. Stars, unfortunately, aren't usually near that cordial. Anyhow - no, it wasn't me - but I still thought y'all might enjoy that.

Like a couple of others I have met Tommy Emmanuel and had a cup of tea with him. Wonderful guy. I also met and chatted with Martin Simpson briefly after a gig. I have also chatted with Claude Bourbon, a great French acoustic blues player and Derrin Nauendorf, another great export from the land of Oz. I have been in contact via e-mail with Dominic Miller (Sting's main axe man) and he was really cool.

I've seen Doc Watson in person in a small venue but not had the pleasure to meet him. However, we are from the same neck of the woods so I feel a certain connection there. My Dad remembers when he used to play on the streetcorners in Wilkesboro, NC. He had to "sell pencils" because it was legal to sell things but not perform for money that way.

My musical heros are Hawaiian slack key players, and as a group they're a bunch of sweet generous people. I've had a few come to my house for workshops and I've met others in the islands. The high point would probably be getting up to jam with Ledward Ka`apana at his regular gig at Kapono's in Honolulu:

Like most, I don't have one favorite player, but I have met two that I admire beyond words. Don Ross, whom I have met several times - incredible player and human being, and Pierre Bensusan who was very nice as well. Didn't get to chat very long with Pierre, but I was blown away to have seen him play in person. I hope to meet John Renbourn at some point as well.

Can't believe I forgot to include what was probably the biggest thrill for me.. Warren Haynes at the Fillmore last year. I got him to sign my Govt Mule shirt from their first tour. Shook my hand, signed my shirt, then tore through a rip-snorter of a set.

My true musical hero's are a pretty short list, and unfortunately, I haven't met any of them.
Tony Iommi - nope John Petrucci - nope (but maybe later this year!) Michael Hedges - nope (RIP) Neil Peart - nope Akira Jimbo - nope Chick Corea - nope I like a TON of other musicians, but these are probably the most significant to me musically. |
