Dreadnought under 1k
Hi guys,
So I've got a Taylor 214ce Koa back and sides and I love it. I was thinking about buying a Dreadnought (without cutaway) under 1k to my gear. It's gotta be brand new and consistancy would be nice, since I'll be ordering online and a friend that is traveling to US will pick it up for me. (some brands you gotta try 5 guitars to find one that sounds good). There are 3 main guitars that I'm interested, but I'm open to recommendations. 1. Martin D10e I mean, when you think about dreadnought, you think about Martin, right? Is the D10e any good? Should I save more for a D12? Or a Martin from the Xseries do the job for less? 2. Taylor 110e To be honest I'm almost dismissing this one. Even lovin Taylor sound, I already got one and I'm afraid I won't find a lot of difference tone wise. 3. Gibson G45 Studio The most expensive one, right at 999 USD. Spec wise, it checks every box. It's all solid wood, and it's the only one made in America. But I'm not sure if they are as consistent as Taylors Let me know if I missed anything! As I said, I'm open to other brands and models. Thanks |

I would look at the Eastmans and Alvarez Masterworks. Both all solid wood and consistently awesome!!

I have a Martin DRS 2 which is the D10 before they renamed it. I really like the guitar. Great tone, projection, volume and has the Martin bassy woof. I don't see me getting rid of it ever. I use medium, Lifespans on it.

Never mind. I totally misread your criteria.

Unless you're only interested in a Martin or Gibson the new Eastman guitars are especially good and even more so at their price point. The E6D is easily under $900 and the E1D is just over $500.

I also have a DRS 2. I like it. I plug in to a Line6 Pod 500hd using an acoustic amp emulator and a little delay. It sounds good through this. When I play at a nursing home I plug straight into their portable sound system. It sounds ok there. It is a piezo pickup.

Martin D15M. List is $1649. MAP is $1299. You can buy it pretty close to $1000 from Maurys Music.
Out of a hundred guitars I have swapped over a dozen years, this is the only one that has stayed with me for the whole time. |

The Guild D-140 (all solid, with hog-substitute back and sides) is a very good guitar for the money. I see these advertised at $750 new.

My recommendation is go with the Martin. I have had countless guitars trying to get what I thought was a substitute for a Martin and I finally concluded if I wanted a Martin then I would buy a Martin. Don't worry about the richlite fret board it's not an issue. I have had 3 richlite guitars and it was a non issue. The Road series Martin's are head and shoulders above anything in that price range. You can get an eastman Martin copy, but it will never be a Martin. The Gibson wouldn't be bad, but I prefer Martin guitars and I have a J45 but still prefer my Martin over it any day.
