Default 1930 Dobro Model 55 - cone question

I just got hold of this Model 55 Dobro. I've found a bunch of clues which date this Dobro to 1929/30. One thing that puzzles me is that there are 4 half inch holes spaced around the center part of the cone which is attached to the tension screw. Does anyone have any information about these perforations? Would it be an original cone from this year Dobro? I haven't seen these holes in any other cones.

The outline of one of these perforations can be seen below through the cover plate between the 4th and 5th strings. There are 4 of these openings spaced around the middle of the center cone, north, south east and west.
