Default New String Day

So wanted to give my findings on two 'boutique' string makers I came across in my last order.

First I tried some Dogal strings for guitar. 80/20. They were not my cup of tea. Smelled very much like a bunch of old coins and went dead in a week for me. (and started turning greenish..) They sounded decent, and played decently, but wouldn't try them again. They also had a weird gauge set up, on a set of 12 gauges, the low E was only a 52...

I just put on some Philippe Bosset strings in 80/20. They sound great. The packaging was impeccable, and the string quality simply by taking them out of the individual envelopes was astounding to me. They are 12-53 and really like them. They don't play as smooth as say the JP 80/20 (but what does), but they are pretty up there with the tone. Hopefully, they last me longer than most 80/20's do!

Never heard of either of those strings in the nine years I have been on the forum.

Interesting. Like Paul, I’d never heard of either of those brands before reading your post. I’m glad you liked one of them, anyway!

In fairness to the Dogal brand strings, what you described sounds to me that they’re quite old, and have probably been sitting around unsold for a number of years. That “old coin smell” indicates oxidation.

Try String Joy.https://www.stringjoy.com/
I've become a fan. Quality plus they will custom make a set for you. Around 12 bucks. I think they're worth it.
They're a small company in Nashville and make the strings the old fashioned way, by hand with great quality control.

I tried the Dogal strings, in phosphor bronze, a while back and loved them. Lush, very melodic strings. Your 80/20 strings must have been from the same shipment and were simply old. The thing I couldn't live with was the price, though.
