Acoustic or electric amp for 1948 gibson L5 with period dearmond pickup?
I am lucky enough to have in my possession a 1948 gibson L5 with a period dearmond pickup in it. I was wondering whether i should use my fender princeton reverb 68 or fishman loudbox mini with it?
Thanks! |

I would try them both and use whichever amp pleases you more. My acoustic archtops with floaters sound great through both my tube amp (Carr Skylark) and my acoustic amp (Fishman Loudbox Mini).

Its not going to hurt the amp if i use the wrong one?

I’ve never played one of these, but most people on YouTube seem to be playing through small fender tube amps. I personally think a floating single coil through a small tube amp is probably the best electric tone ever.

Princeton hands down, until you can find yourself a tweed-style amp with some more power for clean headroom...

I'd use the Princeton, but my ears aren't your ears. So just listen. That'll tell you everything you want to know. Won't it? |

There is no wrong one, so no.

Oh! Now I get why you're asking!
No. The signal from a guitar pickup is miniscule. That's why they need preamps and amps. If you ran one straight into a speaker, you wouldn't be able to hear it. If you put both leads on your tongue, you wouldn't even get a shock. Good question. Nothing wrong with playing it safe! Last edited by Charlie Bernstein; 10-25-2023 at 08:20 AM. |

It's safe to try either. Have fun and tell us what you think.

Amplifiers for guitars made in 1948 with DeArmond pickups, etc weren't made for guitars with modern piezo transducers, so your Princeton would probably be a better match since the input section, which is where a lot of the sound profile is created.

Over the years I've had four modern, solid-state amps*, through which I've played modern and vintage mag pickups on my archtops and Baggs and Highlander USTs on my flat-tops, and they all sounded fine after the inevitable knob-twiddling to find the optimal sound profile. I don't even bother to put the Baggs Para Acoustic in the signal chain any more.
* For the record: Crate 125D, Ashdown Acoustic Radiator, Roland AC 60, Henrikson Blu 6. All amps designed to accommodate acoustic guitars with piezo as well as mag pickups. Also, I've fiddled with string-sets as part of my search for just the right swing-rhythm sound on the archtops, but that's not an amp issue. |

Nope not in any way.
I know a little about these things, I am a retired electronics technician, have been for 39 years. I use a LoudBox Mini with a clip-on condenser mike with my archtop.
