Default played a 60s Martin D-28 this week

Hi guys,

I had the pleasure of playing a 60s Martin D-28 with Brazilian B/S this week for a bit. Very nice sounding guitar with a big neck. Was it worth the $5K to $7.5K price? Yes. Was it better than my guitars. No. Weird huh?

Those were selling around $450 - $550 back then as I recall.... a small fortune in those days!

I'm slowly learning to "Love the one you're with" as Stephen Stills sings but sometimes it isn't easy. This time it was easy but we all know deep down GAS lingers...

It's true that my VS is a killer guitar. It is in the shop right now getting a full refret with EVO. Can't wait to get it back.

Not weird at all. except thebig neck....my experience is that the necks werereally consistent. I guess big compared to what?
I still have my 1968 D28’ which i purchased in 1970 or 71, after dumping a gorgeous 1970 EIR d41 i saved a year for, as a teen (but was full of socks.)

The straighted braced braz guitars sound great, for what they are, but...
My newer Authentics , 08 d41 special, and even an HD28e retro have more overtones and chime...due in part to lighter build and bracing issues. I love scalloped bracing sound. Some dont.

My old d28 had been my musical soul mate for 45+ years...until i played a martin d28 authentic and had an epiphany, and a credit card explosion on the spot.

I actually prefer the newer martins, ‘cause the really old war era , pre or post, ones id like are...expensive.

Otoh, there is always something intriguing and mysterious about an older instrument...feel, smell, patina, coloration, wood, etc.

I had the same experience, last year in Tennessee I played a 1964 D28 and it did sound excellent but to me and tone is subjective here my HD28 sounds just as good.

I paid $442.00 for a new D-28 w/hard shell case in 1963, MI sales tax included.
